Listen and understand, as well as not rushing them but still applying pressure to their studies, most students lack confidence within themselves, so inspiring confidence within a student is a huge base step to learning. In the short run, it is to ensure that they are grasping the concepts in the curriculum. In the long run, the most important thing is to shape their learning habits and change the way they approach concepts so that they are not disheartened by difficulty or sheer amount of learning that awaits them. I am patient while clearing doubts and…

Provide the student with confidence in their own learning ability. Helping students find learning methods that work for THEM, which they can continue to use in the future is the most important thing, and also the most satisfying thing for me as tutor. I consider building confidence in a student highly important when tutoring. In my experience as a teacher, students often value one on one teaching where available. Being able to focus on one student and their needs within their own education, builds a more confident student whether in their work, or when seeking assistance from teachers. Building…

Build confidence! I've worked with many students, time and time again, who hated school because they lacked confidence. By building their confidence, the students were able to do better in their subjects and improve their test scores. I'm very good at assessing skills and adapting my tutoring style to fit the individual needs of the student…

In my personal opinion besides teaching a student what is in the unit/study guide, a tutor should be taking responsibility in creating a fun learning environment and encouraging and motivating the students to be confident. This would help to enhance the students performance. The strength I have as an individual is I am able to create a comfortable…

In my opinion, it is to provide a backbone of support, motivation and dedication towards a student. A tutor is useless if the student is still left lost, confused and hopeless following their session, it is absolutely essential for tutors to give in that level of comfort and ease with their student. The one strength that corresponds with me, I…

A tutor plays a very important role in the development of a student. The student is more informal and feels free to express his/her concerns, rather than at school. As it is a one to one interaction, a tutor has to focus completely and also expect the student to give 100%. Every student is different with their intelligence, maturity and attitude.…

I consider encouragement, feedback and trust to be an important part of tutoring. The teacher should support the learner to become more confident in their own academic capabilities, giving them timely and accurate feedback. Also, it is just as important to build positive relationships with your students so they can come to you with their problems…

Some notions are easy to comprehend. Others are just extremely difficult to understand. Many individuals struggle with abstract ideas, but some students may not understand ideas that you may find simple. Teachers should be willing to explain anything, no matter how challenging they perceive it to be. They should be able to describe these hard…

Konstantinos was a great teacher. He explained the maths very well.
Anthony, Altona North

Inside Altona NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student John worked through solving linear equations and inequalities, using textbook examples to reinforce balancing techniques.

In Year 10, Olivia focused on conditional probability, including practice with tree diagrams and interpreting union and intersection scenarios.

For Year 11, James reviewed the properties of tangent graphs versus sine and cosine functions, then practised sketching and finding x-intercepts for trigonometric graphs ahead of his upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students did not complete or submit assigned homework, especially on algebra calculations and exam revision tasks. In one Year 11 session, "she was asked to send finished questions by email," but no work arrived, leaving gaps before upcoming assessments.

For a Year 10 student revising trigonometry, textbook exercises set for mastering unit circle values were left unfinished, so confusion lingered into the next lesson.

A Year 8 student focusing on factorization received extra problems but struggled to keep pace with required practice—missing out on timely feedback before moving forward.

Recent Achievements

One Altona North tutor noted that Millie, a Year 5 student who used to wait for prompts, is now actively jumping in to answer questions and even works through her own mistakes without hesitation.

In a recent high school maths session, a Year 11 student who had struggled with graphing trigonometric functions started approaching practice test questions with visible confidence, independently solving both sine and tangent graphs after weeks of uncertainty.

Another tutor described how Neha, previously hesitant about essay writing, managed to analyse arguments and write a complete language analysis essay on her own for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Yarraville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bayside P-12 College-Altona North Campus.
