Tutors are someone students can rely on for academic assistance. I recognise that the role of tutors is to aid students in their educational pathways and help students in realising their true academic capabilities, constantly providing constructive feedback for areas of improvement. It is also important to have understanding as the VCE process is…

The most important role as a tutor is to give students confidence in their knowledge and ability. In my personal opinion, objectively high grades (e.g. 80% or more) should not be placed with as high importance as most people tend to do. I believe that if a student understands the content on a level that allows them to make connections or provide…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be reliable and on time, understand the way in which they learn, whether it is visually or through detailed descriptions and providing the skills on how to get to an answer rather simply giving a student the answer. My strengths as a tutor include patience, time management, strong…

I do NOT believe in spoon feeding. Most important is self - discipline and consistency. To built the habit of self-believing and working hard can be beneficial for a student its life! Learning is a life time process - so educating students to think out of the box, questioning, reasoning and working hard to find their ways are some key elements a…

The most important thing a tutor can do is assess their students and the underlying tutoring strategy according to the needs of their students. This means understanding the strengths of their students and helping them leverage those strengths while also giving them useful resources to work on their weaker areas to achieve good results. The most…

I consider communication to be the most important thing a tutor can do for a student, if the communication is not there it’s harder for the student to learn their content meaning grades won’t be at optimal level. I personally think my strengths are that I’m very patient and will not mind going over content until my student understands. I’m…

I believe the most important facet of tutoring students is learning to empathise with them to gain their unique perspective. This is important because it enables the tutor to be critical of their existing teaching habits, to revise their strategies and be adaptable to suit the needs of the student. Simultaneously, I believe it is crucial to match…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is , in my opinion, recognize that each student is unique and has different learning styles, strengths and weaknesses. Tailoring teaching methods and strategies to meet the specific needs of each student could be one of them. Along with that, establishing a safe and supportive learning…

I believe the most valuable tutors to students are those that are able to place themselves in the minds of their students. If I was a 15 year old beginning to learn the basics of calculus for example, I would consider which fundamentals they must first learn to gain a solid and sound foundation before moving onto more difficult components. I…

I think the most important thing a tutor can be is willing to help. When a tutor genuinely wants to see a student thrive and improve, it significantly increases the quality of their service and helps students feel heard and valued. This is far more effective than when a tutor's effort is slack. I can communicate with individuals clearly and…

I feel as though the most important thing a tutor can provide for a student is patience, as being easily angered by a student who may be struggling will result in a negative learning environment which prevents progression, as well as destroying the student\'s confidence and mental health. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to not judge their ability but rather acknowledge the hardwork and congratulate their persistence and incentivise them to want to learn as opposed to being forced to learn, reward the student for getting a new personal best on their test, this will ensure the child knows that their hardwork…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students is make sure that the students understand the concepts thoroughly. Ensuring they do not feel overwhelmed when teaching, it is very important to understand the person you are tutoring to allow for effective teaching without rushing or over complicating an area. You need to be able to go at a pace they understand, and can thus project properly what they have learnt. This will ensure optimal knowledge gets retained…

Konstantinos was a great teacher. He explained the maths very well.
Anthony, Altona North

Inside Altona NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student John worked through solving linear equations and inequalities, using textbook examples to reinforce balancing techniques.

In Year 10, Olivia focused on conditional probability, including practice with tree diagrams and interpreting union and intersection scenarios.

For Year 11, James reviewed the properties of tangent graphs versus sine and cosine functions, then practised sketching and finding x-intercepts for trigonometric graphs ahead of his upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students did not complete or submit assigned homework, especially on algebra calculations and exam revision tasks. In one Year 11 session, "she was asked to send finished questions by email," but no work arrived, leaving gaps before upcoming assessments.

For a Year 10 student revising trigonometry, textbook exercises set for mastering unit circle values were left unfinished, so confusion lingered into the next lesson.

A Year 8 student focusing on factorization received extra problems but struggled to keep pace with required practice—missing out on timely feedback before moving forward.

Recent Achievements

One Altona North tutor noted that Millie, a Year 5 student who used to wait for prompts, is now actively jumping in to answer questions and even works through her own mistakes without hesitation.

In a recent high school maths session, a Year 11 student who had struggled with graphing trigonometric functions started approaching practice test questions with visible confidence, independently solving both sine and tangent graphs after weeks of uncertainty.

Another tutor described how Neha, previously hesitant about essay writing, managed to analyse arguments and write a complete language analysis essay on her own for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Yarraville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bayside P-12 College-Altona North Campus.
