A tutor can help improve a student in academic success. In a classroom setting a teacher has to cover a specific amount of content within a particular time period, some students can pick up the content very easily while others may lag behind on the content. A tutor however solves this issue by understanding the student's strengths and weaknesses…

It is essential that the student feels comfortable learning, and as a tutor I think it is our job to achieve this. Not only should the student feel relaxed while in class, they should start to gain interest in what they are learning. I think at least a tutor can do on the practical aspect is to help the student achieve their goals, lead them and…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to have them gain confidence with themselves in terms of excelling in school. I think this confidence is important in not just getting high marks in quizzes and tests, but I believe that being confident will help them long-term in solving problems not just in school, even though…

In my opinion, these are: -High level of emotional connection to really see the needs of the student. -High adaptability in its own way of teaching, since maybe there is a different way in which the student can understand more and/or better. -Patience, especially in subjects that are tricky to get. I have a very applied way to understand…

Not to force feed content, but take an approach from a different angle of two if the first method does not work. Some understand content from different view points while some get it first try. Other than that, encouragement and support is the other driving factor which will help them want to do better and achieve more. I am patient, organised and…

The most important thing would be to instill interest. To be called a succesfull tutor, one need to instill interest to their students to study during their own time, because we only meet them once or twice a week and most of the time they have to learn by themselves. My strenghs would be my perseverance and open mindedness in teaching. Each…

As a tutor, it is important that you pass on the right knowledge to the student. Make them think about things by themselves instead of giving them straight away. A tutor, shouldn't discourage students if they ask a dumb question, they should resolve all their queries with a good understanding. A tutor's job is to support a student and be curious…

Tutors have to be cooperative and empathetic to teach students. Moreover, they need to embody leadership qualities. I think it is important for the tutor to influence the student to be more enthusiastic towards his studies. It is easier to learn stuff with focus and the right attitude. The tutor has to try and make sessions interesting. Also, at the end of the day, the student must not be dependent on the tutor. As a tutor, you know you have succeeded when once…

As a tutor, it is your obligation to teach in a way that your pupil develops a passion for the topic he is learning. There is nothing worst than somebody who is bored while learning. Focusing on deeply understanding and on practical application is key to awaken a desire to continue learning. "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build self-confidence. From my own experience, I know that grasping a concept feels much harder when it seems 'impossible.' I think the best thing a tutor can do is make learning feel achievable. A big part of that is adapting to how each student learns, breaking things down in a way that makes sense to them, and giving them the confidence to tackle challenges on their own. What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student are build self-confidence, without this they will not believe in themselves and their ability, and therefore will not make the improvements they are capable of, inspire them to create their own goals, both long-term and short term, big and small, and of course, help…

Inside AnnandaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Priya worked through long division and tackled multi-step algebra word problems using guided examples.

For Year 8, Liam focused on solving geometry questions involving angles and also practised converting fractions to decimals with real-life measurement scenarios.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Emily strengthened her understanding of differentiation—including questions with the constant e—and reviewed logarithms through targeted practice sets.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, skipping written working to "save time" led to repeated sign errors—one tutor observed, "he tried to do steps mentally and lost track of negatives."

A Year 12 legal studies student struggled with essay planning; ideas stayed unfocused because cases weren't linked clearly in their structure.

In Year 5 maths, reliance on calculator shortcuts meant fraction skills weren't reinforced and key rules like finding common denominators were forgotten.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student hesitated to attempt new problems out loud, worried about making mistakes—this slowed feedback and reduced confidence during geometry tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Annandale tutor recently saw a Year 10 student move from confusion with profit and loss calculations to confidently applying percentage formulas on her own, which had previously been a sticking point.

In a Year 7 session, a student who used to stay quiet during lessons has started regularly asking clarifying questions about new concepts—an encouraging shift from passive to active learning.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who struggled with long division last term now completes multi-step problems independently and only checks in for occasional guidance. Last week, he finished an entire set of division questions without any errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Inner West Council Library and History Leichhardt Branch—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Brendan's Catholic Primary School.
