What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁

What I enjoy most about tutoring is the process of helping a student grow. Back in the U.S., I tutored students across all grade levels and found it incredibly rewarding to see them develop not only their academic skills but also a strong work ethic and creative problem-solving tools that are applicable far beyond the classroom. I find tutoring deeply fulfilling because I get to play an integral role in a student’s progress. Now that I am at UNSW on exchange through June, I am eager to give back and help students here achieve that same sense of growth and confidence.

My Strengths as Tutor 💪

My biggest skill is my knack for finding the fundamental intuitions required to 'get' a problem. For example, if a student is struggling with fractions, the core issue might be that they don’t 'see' the connection to sharing a pizza - where the bottom number is how many slices we cut, and the top is how many we actually have. I also have great communication skills. I explain hard concepts without getting frustrated and am always patient. Lastly, I always ensure that I put the student first with all the teaching I do.

Most important things I can do for a student 🏅

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build self-confidence. From my own experience, I know that grasping a concept feels much harder when it seems 'impossible.' Confidence changes that perspective, making challenges feel doable and providing the energy needed to tackle difficult problems. I foster this through consistent encouragement and by focusing on effort rather than just the final result. Equally important is putting the student first. This means tailoring my approach and methods to meet the unique needs of each individual, ensuring the support I provide is as unique as the student themselves.

About Batu

Education & Leadership: From the U.S. to Sydney

As an Industrial Engineering student from the University of Illinois currently studying at UNSW, I have always balanced a rigorous academic schedule with a passion for community involvement. Having maintained a High Distinction average and earned a place on the Dean’s Honor List, I’ve developed the analytical discipline needed to teach complex subjects simply. However, what I found most rewarding back home in America was my involvement in university societies. Leading and mentoring younger members in these clubs taught me that success isn't just about personal grades—it's about the 'lightbulb moment' when a mentee finally masters a new skill. I bring that same dedication to my tutoring, helping students develop the confidence to lead their own academic journeys

Excellent Communication & People Skills

Known for his friendly and approachable nature, Batu excels at making students feel at ease. He has honed these communication skills through various leadership roles, including a full year of dedicated tutoring during high school in the U.S. Working with students across multiple grade levels taught him how to adapt his speaking style to suit different ages and learning speeds. His ability to break down technical engineering concepts into simple, everyday language makes him an excellent choice for helping students navigate their most challenging subjects. Batu ensures every interaction is clear, patient, and encouraging, turning difficult lessons into manageable steps.

Proven Time Management & Teaching Experience

With a background in Industrial Engineering, Batu brings a high level of organization and efficiency to every tutoring session. He has refined his time management skills through complex academic projects at UIUC and balancing a rigorous study abroad schedule at UNSW. His leadership experience is particularly evident in his ability to manage diverse learning environments; he has successfully tutored high-energy middle school students, maintaining their focus and turning a "rowdy" atmosphere into a productive one. Having also trained team members in professional roles, he knows how to mentor others with both authority and kindness. These experiences ensure that every lesson is well-structured and productive, providing the perfect balance of disciplined progress and personalized attention.
