It is vital to keep the students motivated and keen to learn, as well as to ensure that each student is receiving the right tuition that benefits them. Not all students learn the same way, so it is key to be able to adapt a teaching style to suit the student. I know how to motivate and instigate curiosity. As the eldest in the family I have a lot…

I feel that is important that a tutor connects to the student and motivates them while providing a safe space for them to learn. Allow them to ask questions confidently. Use different approaches to teach them and make sure their concepts are clear. Being able to connect to the student and change approach to studies…

Since tutoring is a job which is supposed to aid students in addition to school/extra learning resources, the most important ability for a tutor to have is being able to provide means of communication which differ from traditional methods. Being attentive to each student they teach, finding different ways of explaining certain concepts, and being…

The most important thing to be done, rather than jumping directly into the syllabus, is to listen to the students express their strengths and weaknesses in the subject. This is to be aware of where to allocate time with the student so we address what is most important and challenging to them. As a tutor, I maintain a flexible environment, trying…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for students is reinforce them of their ability to do well on a subject if they put in the effort. Some concepts are hard to grasp at first, and requires endurance on part of the students for them to succeed. Another important thing a tutor can do for students is help them grasp concepts instead of…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is not to just be able to teach students the contents that they are supposed to convey and call it a day, but also teach them the creative ways they can go about solving problems presented to them, as there are sometimes more than one way to solve a single problem. I feel…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build both a professional relation and a more personal relationship with students - this enhances the overall tutoring experience for both parties and as a result ensures the student's success as the tutor becomes not only a teacher but also a mentor (where they pass on all knowledge of…

A tutor must give confidence to the student that they can do well in a subject, regardless of their abilities. At the same time, a tutor must encourage the student to put in the work to succeed in the subject by instilling a love for the subject within student. A tutor must also be able to explain concepts in an easily digestible manner so…

The most important thing for a tutor is to not feed the student to information but to guide them as they learn. It's to teach the students how to learn independently and invoke within them a passion and a want for more learning and knowledge. Understanding the student. As a tutor l would want to understand how a student learns best and in what way l can relay information on to the student effectively. Take the class at their pace, be it faster or slower, and adapt to suit their needs. A tutor needs to be able to fill the gaps left by teachers in school to effectively help students. Firstly, a tutor must be kind and caring of the student's situation, and must be able to quickly determine the best method of teaching for that particular student. Only then can the tutor raise the motivation and enthusiasm of the student which is crucial in allowing them to learn at the optimum level. Once they are learning at this level, their…

Inside AnnangroveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Bertina worked through mathematical induction problems and revisited challenging questions from the CSSA 2024 maths advanced HSC paper, with a focus on refining her proof techniques.

For Year 12, James practised complex numbers by tackling roots of unity as well as exploring advanced vector applications in three dimensions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Maya revised financial mathematics concepts—calculating compound interest and interpreting results—and strengthened her understanding of fractions and decimals using practical examples.

Recent Challenges

Forgot to complete the two homework questions set out the previous week. This gap meant less exposure to new problem types before lessons.

In Year 11 Extension Maths, written working was often too brief—key steps were skipped in proofs, making it hard to pinpoint errors. Her step-by-step reasoning occasionally skipped crucial justifications.

One senior student avoided showing working for fear of mistakes during graphing tasks; this slowed feedback and improvement.

During exam revision in Year 12, over-reliance on past papers led to neglect of unfamiliar question types, leaving certain advanced concepts under-practiced.

Recent Achievements

One Annangrove tutor noticed a Year 11 student, who used to feel overwhelmed by exam-style maths questions, now independently working through past trial papers and even tackling harder calculus and sequences problems she'd previously avoided.

In a recent high school session, another student showed a real shift—she started asking clarifying questions as soon as confusion hit, rather than staying quiet and guessing like before.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who struggled with fractions last term is now choosing different strategies to solve fraction and decimal problems without prompting from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Vinegar Hill Memorial Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Annangrove Public School.
