There are 2 jobs of a tutor. To make the student understand what they are learning and also encourage them to do quality practice questions. I have a really deep understanding in all concepts of maths and physics (high school level), and I'm really good at breaking them down into simpler bits. I also know the importance of practicing these…

In my opinion, learning and getting good grades are two things that complement each other. Once students have a firm grasp of the knowledge points in the learning phase, then they will have enough confidence to cope with the exam. As a tutor, you need to help students absorb knowledge more easily at the stage of learning knowledge. For example,…

Try make tutoring fun, students no matter how hard you try will not retain information and be willing to learn if they are really against it. So by presenting the content in a fun but still effective manner, it is bound to show results. The most important thing when it comes to content is to not spoon feed them with the right answers, you need…

A tutor can be kind and patient with the student and open to any kind of question, however basic it might be and not ridicule the child. The tutor can also repeat the same thing until the student had finally grasped the concept so that they are completely confident. Having grown up around teachers, I have learnt a lot from them. I have learnt to…

The most important things as far as I'm considered, are to be readily approachable, and constantly supportive during the entire teaching process. In addition, having a good relationship with the students, being considerate about their holistic health, so that students can come to me for suggestions, not only academically, but also anything my past…

The most crucial thing a tutor can provide for a student is personalised guidance and support. This involves adapting the teaching method to the student's learning style and needs, recognising & addressing problems. A tutor should also inspire confidence in students and create a positive learning environment where questions are encouraged and…

My main goal as a tutor is watch my students improve. Hence the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be their support system. To encourage them during challenging times and to always keep their spirits up so that they will always be motivated to do their best. The most important virtue that I consider for being a tutor for a student is having the patience to understand what they are expecting out of me, in order for me to give them back the necessary skills and training they require to excel in their domain. In addition to this, having a practical approach other than the traditional teaching style is…

A tutor must be able to secure a positive impression of the subject in the student's mind, regardless of how arduous the subject content might be. A tutor is a third parent and must have immense patience to ensure that the child grasps each and every detail, even if they ask us to repeat what we taught. Besides, as tutors, we must always advocate…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be proud of all the improvements the student has done. It's not about congratulating them for being a high achieving student. Instead, we should congratulate them for any improvement that they have done, since that is one step closer to success. I believe one of my strengths is…

I think teaching students how to be independent is something tutors must do. Prioritizing things like active learning wherein students get to question things themselves, rather than being spoon-fed answers is important. Making them learn that they can find the answers themselves if they put in the effort is important. And obviously creating all…

Ensure that the knowledge they have been taught is ultimately retained and not just listened to. If that does not work, I will teach students the train of thought when solving different types of questions, summarise the key points and raise efficiency in their learning. I believe a teacher can either make or break a student and I've seen both scenarios happen around me. The first and foremost is being patient. Not everyone can learn and understand concepts at the same pace, so patience is very important. Trying different learning styles when the initial learning style doesn't work is another one, because people don't learn the same way. I'm very good at breaking down complex concepts into clear,…

Inside ArmadaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 Dishita focused on interpreting time-series data, including mean-smoothing and deseasonalisation techniques, and practiced applying the 68-95-99.7 rule for normal distributions using exam questions.

Year 11 Emily worked through scatterplots and transformations in statistics, consolidating skills by tackling residuals and regression problems from recent school assessments.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Josh revised financial mathematics concepts such as compound interest calculations and explored surface area and volume of composite shapes through targeted textbook exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3–4, one student often attempted times tables and complex multiplication mentally rather than writing out working, which led to confusion and missed steps—she sometimes forgets to add zeros when moving to the next line.

Notably, in VCE Maths (Year 12), a different student relied on reading exam questions quickly without highlighting key information or taking structured notes. As noted: Needs to read the question carefully. Use a sheet of paper to track reading.

In both cases, skipping systematic written processes made it harder to spot errors and slowed progress during challenging tasks or under exam conditions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Armadale recently saw Dishita, a Year 12 student, begin using the 'talk-aloud' strategy to break down complex standardised score questions—something she previously found daunting. She's now highlighting key details in exam problems and independently choosing the right formulas.

Meanwhile, Rose (Year 6) has moved from needing step-by-step support with long division to confidently solving multi-digit problems and tackling time conversion questions with little prompting.

For a younger learner, Jacob is no longer relying solely on his number line for single-digit addition; he now attempts mental calculations first and checks his work before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Malvern Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like The King David School - The Rebecca Magid Centre.
