The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them a sense of confidence when they return the classroom after having something explained to them in a way they can understand. Ideally the end goal a tutor should have is for a student to be able to understand concepts in a subject by themselves, without the explanation of a tutor.…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, tailor their approach to meet individual needs, and provide consistent encouragement. Helping students feel confident in their abilities creates a strong foundation for learning, as they are more likely to engage actively and tackle challenges head-on.…

Helping them feel to comfortable to make mistakes, and then to learn from said mistakes. I think that fear of failure is one of the big issues in learning, because if you are scared to try something even if you're unsure, you'll never be able to learn and succeed. I am very personable, and able to meet people where they are at. I am…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to understand the learning ability of a student. Each student has a different capacity to grasp concepts and learning to be patient and adapt to the student's individual needs while also being able to ensure that the content is covered is essential. As a tutor, I am able to…

As a student who has had tutors in the past, I think that the most important thing that a tutor can do for their student is to be there for them when they need help and assistance. Time is obviously very valuable, but I realised that I appreciated those tutors who went above and beyond to ensure that I received the help that I needed. Further,…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence and self trust, as this often leads to improved performance. I make lessons engaging by involving students in each step, encouraging questions and critical thinking, and emphasising both independent learning and problem solving. I also give students breaks when…

A successful tutor needs to be open to different needs of individual learners and be able to provide flexible methods of catering for various needs. This will require them to be professional and knowledgeable about what they do and provide high levels of acceptance and adaptability. I think the most important role of the tutor is to analyse and reflect on a student's learning and problem-solving approach methods, in order to provide meaningful adjustments for greater comfort and confidence going forward. In other words, the identification of barriers to learning is the most crucial point of a tutor's action, as it is the…

A tutor is a magician to the students. He can't do magic but he can do wonders if the chemistry between the tutor. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make learning simple by building from a very strong foundation. The reason many students struggle with complex concepts is because their foundation is either weak or vague. My approach has always been to start with the basics, explain them in simple terms, and then gradually build…

I would say to keep the student intersted and excited about learning. You have them invested in the subject and half your job is done. Teaching doesnt have to be monotonous, mundane and boring. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to be patient, and to help the student learn to learn. It is an easier job to tell a student the correct answers than to help them understand how to get there. Taking the time to ensure a student truly understands each lesson and correction can inadvertently be the fastest way…

Most importantly, putting time and efforts after students till their basics are clear is the key for a tutor to use. Personal relationships are foundational to student success. The more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. I listen to students well so that I can better understand their misconceptions and errors. I would encourage them in the learning process…

Inside ArmadaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 Dishita focused on interpreting time-series data, including mean-smoothing and deseasonalisation techniques, and practiced applying the 68-95-99.7 rule for normal distributions using exam questions.

Year 11 Emily worked through scatterplots and transformations in statistics, consolidating skills by tackling residuals and regression problems from recent school assessments.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Josh revised financial mathematics concepts such as compound interest calculations and explored surface area and volume of composite shapes through targeted textbook exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3–4, one student often attempted times tables and complex multiplication mentally rather than writing out working, which led to confusion and missed steps—she sometimes forgets to add zeros when moving to the next line.

Notably, in VCE Maths (Year 12), a different student relied on reading exam questions quickly without highlighting key information or taking structured notes. As noted: Needs to read the question carefully. Use a sheet of paper to track reading.

In both cases, skipping systematic written processes made it harder to spot errors and slowed progress during challenging tasks or under exam conditions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Armadale recently saw Dishita, a Year 12 student, begin using the 'talk-aloud' strategy to break down complex standardised score questions—something she previously found daunting. She's now highlighting key details in exam problems and independently choosing the right formulas.

Meanwhile, Rose (Year 6) has moved from needing step-by-step support with long division to confidently solving multi-digit problems and tackling time conversion questions with little prompting.

For a younger learner, Jacob is no longer relying solely on his number line for single-digit addition; he now attempts mental calculations first and checks his work before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Malvern Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like The King David School - The Rebecca Magid Centre.
