A tutor should be able to build confidence for a student in a subject that is not their strongest. By building this confidence, students can go into exams with a clear understanding of the subject. For the student’s future, the confidence from succeeding in a subject can flow into other aspects of their lives, allowing them to help others. I am…

The most critical things a tutor can do are to clarify, establish a supportive and encouraging atmosphere, and help students develop independent problem-solving skills. A tutor should not only help with current school problems but also transfer self-confidence and effective study habits with which students can succeed in school. My strengths as a…

Creating a wanting to learn. No child will improve grades if they do not want to learn and that comes from my own personal experience. Therefore the most important thing for me is that I can help a student enjoy learning and then through that passion myself and the student can enjoy seeing improvements in their learning and grades. It’s also…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is, teach a student the joy of learning and adapting to new problems on their own. This is so they can progress more by themselves and feel more independent and confident in their learning. I can help keep students engaged, and able to clearly explain things in an understanding way that has been…

For me, as a student, what I sought from my tutor was discovering how I learn best, rather than adhering to a one-size-fits-all approach. I also valued having someone with whom I could freely share my thoughts without fear of judgment, essentially a friend. I believe it is also important to clearly communicate ideas so that they can then communicate them clearly themselves. Moreover, it is crucial to encourage students to think critically by giving them the opportunity to independently…

I think a good tutor is beyond just a subject matter expert and can be conducive to the development of the student as a whole. I feel the concept of tutoring is very personal and that a tutor should make a student feel comfortable enough to encourage him/her to view the tutor as a confidante. Furthermore, there's the added advantage of being able…

I consider a tutor responsibility towards students is to be committed and flexible. The tutor should be with their student even if both have been going through the exam period. The tutor should never cancel on a lesson with a student for their own studies. As well, it is a must to be patient towards the student and be flexible as a tutor to learn…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can provide a student is confidence. It is paramount that a tutor encourages the student to become intrinsically motivated to study and to cultivate a love for the subject, as this will allow the student to fully achieve their potential. Being a tutor requires a great responsibility. The first and foremost thing a tutor can do is to be a friend with the student and develop a rapport. We have to understand them first then only we can approach accordingly through our teaching. It's like being a therapist and getting to know them better. If we succeed then we can easily transfer and…

Inside AscotTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Lily focused on ratios and dividing with decimals, also practicing worded ratio problems from her textbook.

For Year 9, Lola worked through algebraic expressions and simultaneous equations, including strategies for adding and subtracting with negative numbers.

In Year 11, Ava tackled sketching parabolas by examining how coefficients affect their shape and applied these concepts using software to estimate real-life structures.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often completed algebra questions in cramped, unstructured layouts, leading to confusion and errors; as a tutor observed, "she sometimes tends to do her working out in a cramped space and loses her train of thoughts causing her to make mistakes."

In Year 12 Accounting, small calculation errors crept in when practice with income statements wasn't followed up by revisiting feedback or reviewing past work.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student hesitated to ask questions when unsure—leaving misunderstandings unaddressed until the next lesson and slowing progress on topics like negative numbers.

Recent Achievements

One Ascot tutor recently saw a Year 11 student move from a D to a B on their latest assessment, after weeks of showing less resistance and even adding their own input when solving questions—previously, they would avoid engaging at all.

In another session, a high schooler who used to hesitate now independently completed almost an entire maths assignment without asking for help, bringing in techniques remembered from earlier lessons.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised her tutor by doing all her homework exactly as instructed and getting most answers right—a first for her this term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bayswater Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Belmont Primary School.
