Inside Ballarat EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Greta worked on algebraic expansion and solving simple linear equations, alongside revision of negative numbers using number lines.

Year 9 student Jack focused on trigonometry, including labelling triangle sides, setting up sin/cos/tan ratios, and rearranging equations to solve for unknowns with calculator support.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sophie tackled quadratic equations through worded problems and graphing techniques, identifying roots and key points on parabolas.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3, a student avoided showing written working for fraction and division problems, relying heavily on visual diagrams—especially when denominators weren't simple, which made later questions much harder to tackle.

In Year 6 English, "talking it through with someone else helped a lot," but she still struggled to express ideas in writing or take up feedback on how to clarify answers.

At the senior level (Year 11 Methods), one student's notes showed frequent arithmetic mistakes during surds and induction proofs because they didn't consistently show their working. This often meant extra time was spent tracking errors rather than mastering new concepts.

Recent Achievements

One Ballarat East tutor saw a Year 9 student shift from hesitating with negative numbers to confidently using number lines and strategies for multiplying negatives, even choosing to tackle new powers topics unprompted.

In Year 11, another student who'd previously struggled to lay out algebraic working now writes all steps clearly and labels diagrams accurately, especially when expanding brackets and collecting like terms with positive and negative coefficients.

Meanwhile, a primary school student who once avoided reading aloud became so engaged in story time that she started volunteering to read herself—even reacting to plot twists as she read the next chapter out loud.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I am very happy with Rachel. She is very professional and her and Samantha have developed a good working relationship. Samantha has expressed to me that Rachel explains things really well and now she is understanding concepts she hadn't previously.

As you say it is hard to gauge the impact this early, however they seem to have a few laughs and Steve has said Jack is a lot faster in his response time. So that's progress considering Jack's willingness to begin extra learning was very poor. It didn't take more than 2 lessons for that to change. To date we are happy and are glad we didn't leave it any later, as it it the beginning of term I'm sure i will be getting feedback from Jack's teacher through the term on his improvement.I look forward to that. We want him to enjoy all lessons not dread the thought of attending classes. So far so good, Steve seems like a great match.

I just wanted to let you know how very happy we are with Tianna's tutor, Josephine. Josephine is so bubbly, easy going, very patient and great at teaching Maths and making it fun to learn.   Tianna is quite taken with Josephine, has built a great rapport with her and has made huge progress with her algebra in the short while Josephine has been tutoring her. Josephine is definitely a great asset to your company and we are so happy she is Tianna's tutor
