The most important things a tutor can do is provide a support network and assistance for the students both in and outside of academics. With students, a tutor should not only be considered a teacher but also a friend who they can inquire about topics and issues which a tutor has already experienced and can be an assistance of. My strengths are a…

The most important thing by far, especially that I have found over the years, is to have a presence that shows genuine concern for the student's understanding. I believe tutors bear much more of a responsibility than they let on. In my experience, the way a tutor approaches a problem with a student, no matter how trivial, can mean the difference…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them reach their full potential. This is achieved by helping them to enjoy learning about the subject that they are studying. It is important for a tutor to be engaging and passionate so the student is eager to learn and is excited to come to lessons. A tutor also needs to be patient…

The most important thing would be to create a safe space for students, so they will feel welcomed and understood. This can build their confidence as well. Once they feel safe, the students can ask any question and tutor can help them and fill their knowledge gap. My strength would be perseverance, adaptability, and emphaty. I would try and give…

I believe a tutor is not only a teacher but also a mentor. They are someone for the student to look up to, but also there to help the student develop their understanding through friendship and camaraderie. As they are separate from both school and home settings, they can offer an external and unique perspective on both academic and personal…

In the context of Science and Mathematics, the key aspect is HOW to think. Science requires imagination, innovation as well as an excellent recall and grasp of modern scientific understanding. Mathematics, being a tool - requires the students to be well-equipped with the basic mathematical tools. To directly answer this question; a tutor must…

I think it is important for the tutor to influence the student to be more enthusiastic towards his studies. It is easier to learn stuff with focus and the right attitude. The tutor has to try and make sessions interesting. Also, at the end of the day, the student must not be dependent on the tutor. As a tutor, you know you have succeeded when once…

Teaching them how to study is the key. Helping them to get better grades is definitely important, but teaching them the method to study is more important. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student understand a topic. This may sound intuitive however it is often majorly overlooked and replaced with acceptance or shear memorisation for the student. What I want is for my students is a true understanding of the subject, giving them the tools of learning so that they can…

Besides teaching concepts and helping students solve problems, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to motivate students. What do you consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student? Making sure that all of my student's questions are answered before the end of the lesson is one of the most important things in tutoring in my opinion. A tutor can clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and guide them accordingly. He should focus on the strengths and minimise their weaknesses. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is act as a motivation for them to achieve their personal best. Although raising marks is the main objective for tutors, they must be able to interact with the students and find their weak points and there is a limit to what they can teach. They must act as a pillar that can support their…

Inside Balmain EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Charlie reviewed mean, median, mode and tackled Interquartile Range, then moved on to constructing and interpreting box plots using recent test questions.

Year 9 student Emma practised solving simultaneous equations and reinforced her understanding of algebraic equations through targeted problem sets.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ava focused on compound interest calculations and depreciation problems in maths, working through real-world scenarios for extra clarity.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student struggled with reading worded geometry questions fully, leading to missed key details—"she is still struggling picturing the different scenarios from the word questions," noted a tutor.

In Year 11, failure to plan and condense history notes led to either excess information or critical gaps when revising for assessments.

For Year 8 algebra, skipping steps in rearranging equations hid sign errors and slowed progress.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student repeatedly forgot multiplication tables during fraction work, causing frustration mid-task and slowing confidence growth when tackling more complex problems.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Balmain East noticed a big shift for one Year 10 student who had previously missed key details in algebra questions; she now checks each problem more carefully and rarely skips important information.

In Year 8 maths, another student moved from confusion with multi-step percentage problems to independently solving even the longest ones without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner who once hesitated to read aloud tackled Level 11 and 12 books solo this week, finishing them with no help and even attempting the next level up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balmain Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nicholson Street Public School.
