It's essential to not only teach how to solve problems, but to teach a student how they are able to learn by themselves. This will ensure a bright future for students. Also, I encourage students to seek help when they need it. Some problems cannot be solved on your own. I like to connect with students on their level. I enjoy solving problems so I…

The most valuable thing that a tutor can do for a student is to give them clear explanations of every topic and hence, be able to make significant improvements in their score at school. I believe my greatest strength as a tutor is patience. If the student told me to explain something, I would try my best to do that until I was told that my student…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is aid them in being confident enough to always attempt a problem. A great tutor helps a student to put aside the "oh no, I don't know what to do" thought or feeling and and least try to break the problem into something they do know how to do. My strengths as a tutor come in my genuine passion…

Facilitate the comprehension of the concepts studied, a tutor is not there to do the homework by himself but rather to show a better way to do it and to provide help in understanding the concepts needed to carry out a homework or while studying for an exam. Very closely tied to this is the building of the student, edifying the student if you…

A tutors time is the most important thing for a student. If a student requires some extra attention due to doubts it is the duty of the tutor to provide him/her with the extra time and support. As a tutor I feel it is very important to understand as to how the student is taking in the content. Is the content interesting for the student or is it…

One of the most crucial things, which a tutor can do to benefit a student is to create a learning space that has a good atmosphere with support and understanding. This enables them to construct their competence and enthusiasm in the discipline, which is imperative for their success. My greatest assets include a steady demeanour as well as the…

It is important that I responsibly and reliably ensure that a student can turn to me for help apart from their school teachers/parents. Parents have an expectation for me to do my job to a certain standard, which I have a duty to provide to them such extents. Not every student thinks the same, they have different strengths and weaknesses and I…

The most important thing a tutor can do is recognise their students ability level and mould their teaching to that level. This insures that the kids do not feel out of depth, but also they are learning new things every session. I am a very social and friendly person making it easy for me to build strong rapport with the students, and as a result…

I think the most important thing I can do for a student is really just build their foundational understanding of the content. I believe that tutoring should not be a formulaic job. Essentially, what that means is that different people have different ways of learning and I think it's important for tutors to be able to adapt to how a student approaches a particular topic instead of standardizing knowledge. My main strengths are that I am very good with people of all ages…

While obviously a tutor is paid to help a student improve their grades or help them study, a tutor that is able to give a student an actual interest in the subject matter is one of the best things a tutor can do. Create a comfortable, relaxed environment to learn and ask questions. Improve confidence: many students don't know what they're capable of, and just need the self-belief to show it off. I think enthusiasm is important - I have found in my own studies that when someone isn't enthusiastic about what they are teaching, it can easily dampen one's own ability to take on information. As i mentioned, being patient and encouraging is key to making students feel confident in their learning. Finally, being organised so that when the lesson…

Audrey, Balmain

Inside Balmain EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Charlie reviewed mean, median, mode and tackled Interquartile Range, then moved on to constructing and interpreting box plots using recent test questions.

Year 9 student Emma practised solving simultaneous equations and reinforced her understanding of algebraic equations through targeted problem sets.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ava focused on compound interest calculations and depreciation problems in maths, working through real-world scenarios for extra clarity.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student struggled with reading worded geometry questions fully, leading to missed key details—"she is still struggling picturing the different scenarios from the word questions," noted a tutor.

In Year 11, failure to plan and condense history notes led to either excess information or critical gaps when revising for assessments.

For Year 8 algebra, skipping steps in rearranging equations hid sign errors and slowed progress.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student repeatedly forgot multiplication tables during fraction work, causing frustration mid-task and slowing confidence growth when tackling more complex problems.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Balmain East noticed a big shift for one Year 10 student who had previously missed key details in algebra questions; she now checks each problem more carefully and rarely skips important information.

In Year 8 maths, another student moved from confusion with multi-step percentage problems to independently solving even the longest ones without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner who once hesitated to read aloud tackled Level 11 and 12 books solo this week, finishing them with no help and even attempting the next level up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balmain Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nicholson Street Public School.
