The most important thing a tutor can do is not only to support a student but to make them feel as though they have accomplished what they set out to achieve, even if it is a small goal, as long as it gets fulfilled. I believe that I can personalise the amount of help I provide to a student, no matter their abilities. This will allow me to ensure…

I think one of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence within them. I believe confidence is the key for all students across any level to be able to achieve their desired study outcomes. Without the belief that they have the skills and resources to succeed in any aspect they desire, students can be left…

I believe every student has their own way of learning, so I focus on building a study routine that works for them — whether it’s setting up a realistic revision schedule, practicing exam-style questions, or using targeted strategies to tackle procrastination. My approach is to pinpoint their strengths, address any gaps, and equip them with…

The tutor needs to make sure that all the questions of the student are answered really well. Most importantly, the tutor needs to be a role model for the student. Someone that he/she can look up to and be proud of. I have the ability to be extremely patient with my students which helps me gain their trust. Moreover, I can also induce self…

In addition, tutors have to be careful to express their opinions and fully understand the students' ideas when teaching the course. I believe as a tutor, it is important to teach the subject to the student in a way that is enjoyable while still delivering the knowledge across. It is important that the tutor is not simply feeding the student equations or tricks to achieve good marks, but that the tutor is helping the student understand the topic enough to be able to solve…

Give them a safe space to ask questions and learn in a way they enjoy and are progressing in. There is no point in being over qualified and intelligent, but unapproachable and closed off. I really fell that a tutor should be a friend and not like a teacher so that student can easily approach them with their silly doubt without any fear and clear their concept thoroughly. I think being a good tutor should be encouraging and passionate. And tutors should know what students need for help on their strengths and weakness. Also, tutors also should always encourage students to be brave in asking questions so the students can get faster improvement. Especially for young age students, they are hard to focus but it's…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the tools to be able to confidently work through academic problems on their own. In an English context this can mean teaching a student how to deconstruct what is required by a question, or giving them the skills to analyse a text for thematic and technical…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students feel safe to try, fail, and grow. Many students come into tutoring thinking they are "just bad at maths," and it's our job as tutors to help break that mindset. From my own experience, I know how powerful it is when someone takes the time to understand your gaps, explain things at…

Local Reviews

It was easy to get started on Maths tutoring for my son. I registered interest online and received a phone call soon afterwards. I advised my requirements and received a text from our new tutor within a few days. We have had one session so far. I was impressed by how knowledgeable the tutor was, and how relevant she made the session to my sons needs.
Elisabeth, Balwyn North

Inside Balwyn NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Charlie practised simplifying fractions and adding and subtracting fractions using number lines for visual support.

In Year 8, Olivia explored concepts of percentages as well as GST and discounts, applying these to real-world scenarios.

For a Year 11 student, Daniel worked through integration by substitution and recognition methods, focusing on how to approach related SAC questions with extended mathematical reasoning.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was hesitant to attempt harder algebra problems, tending to focus on familiar questions; as the tutor noted, "she circled back to easy equations instead of tackling the more challenging ones." This meant less progress with complex substitution and balancing tasks.

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student often skipped writing out full working when applying ratios or unpacking redox titration questions—errors in calculation crept in unnoticed.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 Maths student leaned heavily on their calculator for trigonometric simplifications but missed opportunities to strengthen mental fluency; this slowed problem-solving under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Balwyn North tutor recently saw a Year 9 student who used to hesitate when solving equations now confidently add and subtract terms on both sides to isolate x, tackling problems without prompting.

In a senior session, a Year 12 student who previously struggled with trig identities managed to simplify fractions using trigonometric rules and successfully differentiate inverse trig functions for the first time.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who had been guessing at shapes began accurately naming polygons with more than four sides and even transformed numerical digits into English up to 999 without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balwyn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bede's School.
