The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be attentive, approachable, and patient. There is nothing worse than missing out on understanding concepts because you are too scared or embarrassed to ask a question. That is why creating a positive environment where the tutor can actively help and guide is very important. My strengths as a…

Think to pass the belief that the student can achieve the goal. It is just the matter of working hard and maybe trying different approach. And also not comparing yourself to other students, because everyone is unique. I, myself, was in a situation where I had very low marks in Math and Science subjects, but I worked hard and I saw my brain change…

Personal connection would be my important factor in tutoring, having a good basic relationship and being able to build upon that will make communicating to the student much easier. I believe that there is often a barrier between teachers and students in a school system and sometimes that barrier may affect an individual student, it transforms into…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to support the student with positivity so that he/she feels passionate to learn and never lose hope if they find something difficult to learn I feel like I am very patient thus I can explain someone on repeat if they have a problem to understand. I have always felt the most important thing to do for them is to - rid them of the fear of that subject and making them self sufficient. I study pure mathematics in university , because I see a certain kind of beauty in natural sciences , therefore tend to bring my student to appreciate the language of the universe in a light they probably…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listening to them to truly understand what their needs and goals are. I also think it is important for a tutor to establish a link with the student, to make the lesson less "formal" and more enjoyable for the student as he/she would learn better if the environment is less stressful. As I am…

It is very important for the tutor to build their students confidence by celebrating their progress and encouraging their efforts. Tutors should also adapt their teaching style to their students specific needs. The tutor should also ensure their student's understanding is complete, that they aren't simply regurgitating information. I am patient, I…

The most improtant thing that the tutor can do is to teach and educate the student to her/his best by giving the child all the support that the student needs to get ahead with his/her peers. I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, encourage curiosity, and build the student’s confidence in their own abilities. A tutor should not just provide answers, but also guide the student in developing problem-solving skills and independent thinking, so they can succeed beyond the tutoring…

Apart from general academic support, I think it's very important for tutors to identify students' learning gaps, and provide constructive feedbacks. My strength as a tutor would be my grade and experience. I was a volunteer maths/science tutor in high school for about 3 years, as well as currently mentoring programming workshops for high school…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is aid them in being confident enough to always attempt a problem. A great tutor helps a student to put aside the "oh no, I don't know what to do" thought or feeling and and least try to break the problem into something they do know how to do. My strengths as a tutor come in my genuine passion…

I think confidence is key, it’s not about rigorous testing, its about ensuring that they have confidence to solve the problem, focusing on teaching the method in different ways. ( E.g teaching a formula in maths based on step by step, visual and writing the instructions down in words) I never really had a normal study method and it really made…

Inside BanksiaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sasha practised measurement skills by working through questions from Chapter 8 and also received support on specific homework problems.

In Year 10, James revised simultaneous equations using the elimination method and focused on understanding coefficients through step-by-step examples.

For Year 12, Charlotte completed practice questions on networks, rates, and ratios directly aligned with the Standard Mathematics syllabus to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student tackling networks found it difficult to memorise key definitions and formulas, which slowed progress; as the tutor noted, "explaining the parts of the topic he didn't understand was hard without repeating myself."

In Year 7 algebra, another student consistently avoided writing out working for equations, making sign errors harder to catch.

For a primary creative writing task, one child hesitated to try new ideas out of fear of mistakes—leading to less original responses.

Meanwhile, in senior trigonometry revision, incomplete homework limited the depth of discussion and practice on advanced problems.

Recent Achievements

One Banksia tutor noticed a Year 11 student who, after struggling with ratios in the past, began identifying calculation errors independently and even caught a mistake before the tutor did during a complex networks problem.

In another high school session, a student who used to skip showing working for algebra now writes out each step and talks through her process aloud without prompting, making it much easier to catch mistakes early.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student recently started asking for extra worksheets on mixed numerals—something she previously avoided—and now tries new fraction problems by herself before seeking help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bayside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Arncliffe Public School.
