Individuality. As I have spent time as a basketball coach and a chemistry tutor. In this time I have learnt how different people intake knowledge and how different people need support. After graduation I started studying a Bachelor of Nursing in 2020. During that year, I realized this was not what I wanted to do. I realized I had a real passion…

This allows the tutor to understand what is difficult and what is easier for the student and at the same time displays to the student that the tutor cares and wants to better the student's life. I am…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, make them feel comfortable and create a positive environment. In my childhood, I was taught "a good teacher is someone who makes a student fall in love with the subject" and the idea has always been in me. I try to follow that ideology by making leaning…

Approach tutoring with an open mind. Some students can easily grasp the concepts while the others it may take time or a special approach for them to understand.Making the student feel comfortable is very important to allow them to express themselves and feel free to ask if they don't understand. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is inspire and motivate. While these seem like simple elements, in successfully doing so, the tutor has essentially altered the learning experiences for the student from that moment onwards. The student is then able to develop their confidence in their subjects, push to achieve their goals,…

Being a teacher, it's his/her duty to make the student understand any concept accurately with an ease and with great patience. The most important thing you can do for a student as a tutor is to give them the space the communicate. I think that in learning anything, you need to have an understanding of where others are coming from to be able to identify where they differ. This relates to tutoring because if there is a misunderstanding in a topic, I can identify where this…

Firstly, I believe the philosophy of "Teaching to fish rather than giving a fish. " It suggests that the tutor has a responsibility to inspire her students to take further exploration in the subject and cultivate good learning habits. Secondly, I think encouragement is essential in tutoring. Being as a tutor, I would let my student know that they…

We are very happy with the tutoring and our tutor is very good with my children. They are really enjoying it and this speaks volumes as they were both very opposed to the idea!

Inside BardonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Oskar worked on algebra and number patterns using his Year 5 Maths Resource book, with extra practice set for homework.

A Year 7 student used real-world Kokoda Challenge event data to calculate average speeds between checkpoints, applying rate and time calculations in a practical context.

For a Year 10 student, recent lessons included probability concepts, normal distribution curves, and an introduction to derivatives and exponential distributions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 algebra, skipping the habit of back-checking led to "a few minor errors which checking could easily fix," especially when fractions were involved.

A Year 11 student tackling derivatives sometimes began new questions before finishing previous ones, causing confusion and unfinished working.

In upper primary, homework in multiplication was occasionally left incomplete or not attempted with pencil and paper, despite reminders.

For a Year 8 word problem set, rushing to answer before fully understanding the question resulted in misinterpreted tasks; as one tutor observed, "he needs to work on fully understanding what a question is asking before attempting it."

Recent Achievements

One Bardon tutor noted a Year 10 student who used to quietly guess through division questions now talks aloud while working, and has started double-checking answers with pencil and paper—something he'd never done before.

In Year 8 maths, another student who often avoided larger worded problems has begun breaking them into steps using new strategies, showing clear independence in tackling multi-part questions.

A Year 4 learner, previously hesitant with subtraction, now solves bigger addition and subtraction tasks out loud, explaining her thinking as she works. Last week she completed her homework without any reminders or prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashgrove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
