The most important thing that a tutor can do for their students is to build a relationship. This foundation will help students to have a trust in their tutor and this will encourage them to share their problems. If the tutor understands the exact problem the student is struggling with, then they can alter their teaching techniques according to…

I feel the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to them. Being able to understand their source of motivation as well as the areas in which they need the most help is extremely vital as a tutor. I think my strength as a tutor comes from my passion as a teacher. Whilst not having any formal experience tutoring, I know I enjoy…

The most important thing a math tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence. From my experience, most students understand math but are afraid of it. Being scared of math makes it more likely for students to make mistakes. My HSC maths teacher used to say that to be able to understand mathematics, one must understand the basics of it…

I strongly believe the student should be interested in the subject. And I think, it is the role of the tutor to create that interest. The tutor's success is similar to that of a doctor. You succeed when you are no longer needed. I am a student and understand very well the issues students face when doing sums and exams. I believe I have mastered…

It is important that I responsibly and reliably ensure that a student can turn to me for help apart from their school teachers/parents. The tutor plays an important role in teaching the student that they care about their academics and them as a person. Some kids feel hopeless in some subjects at school, due to bad grades or teachers that have other students to focus on, and believe that there is no way to improve because of that. Through the one-on-one experience with tutors, the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to truly understand the student and make them feel supported and comfortable. A tutor's job is to build confidence and make learning feel rewarding. That starts with clear explanations, patient encouragement, and adapting to the student's pace. It also means modelling effective study habits and problem-solving strategies, so they can work independently. When students enjoy the process and trust their skills, their results…

I think a tutor has to be such kind of person who can unwillingly be able to establish himself/ herself as a role model to follow which will guarantee the success of the the student in the future. Help students build a structured approach to problem-solving. A tutor can clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and guide them accordingly. He should focus on the strengths and minimise their weaknesses. This is very important as it gives a clear direction to the students. This can also help them realise what career path would be good for them. A tutor should also be able to help students…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to share their passion for learning, helping them view education as an exciting adventure rather than just another task. Inside Bardwell ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Aimee revised exponents and prime factorisation, then practised converting between decimals, fractions, and percentages.

For Year 10, Emily focused on quadratic expressions by factorising both monic and non-monic equations using the PSF method and also worked through completing the square.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jason applied the sine rule to solve for unknown sides in triangles and explored its applications with practice questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student working on negative numbers often avoided writing out full workings, preferring to "do it in my head," which led to repeated sign errors and confusion—especially in worded questions.

In a Year 10 geography task, not having the assignment sheet or any class notes left her scrambling for requirements at the last minute; as one tutor observed, "she was somewhat unprepared as this assignment was left to the last minute."

Meanwhile, a primary student's tendency to write long run-on sentences made editing difficult and sometimes caused missed grammar corrections. These moments slowed progress and increased frustration during sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Bardwell Park tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who had struggled with algebraic laws now working through commutative and associative law problems without needing reminders, showing real independence compared to earlier sessions.

Another high school student was initially hesitant about probability concepts but started asking for extra practice on sample space and could accurately explain the difference between theoretical and experimental probability by the end of the lesson.

In a primary session, a Year 4 learner who previously rushed their work began checking each answer before moving on—demonstrating new patience by catching their own mistakes in a fractions exercise.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Earlwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bardwell Park Infants School.
