The most important thing a tutor can do is being able to explain a concept in a manner which a student can understand. Along with this, I think it is important for a tutor to empower their students, give them confidence, help them reach their goals and improve. Also, to be understanding, patient and flexible with your teaching method, as everyone…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to tailor their teaching approach to meet the individual needs of each student. For example, I work with a student who has mild ADHD and struggled with maintaining focus. To address this, I incorporated short physical activities, such as star jumps, into our sessions every 15…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, provide clear and personalized explanations, and foster a supportive learning environment. A tutor should help students develop problem-solving skills, encourage them to ask questions, and guide them to become independent learners who can approach challenges with…

Build their confidence and prepare them before an exam. This personally was the most important thing for me prior to every exam as I would always enter panicked and feeling nauseous. After being tutored, I feel this is one of the most necessary and significant thing a tutor can do for a student. I am very patient and can attempt to explain a…

I consider the most important things a tutor can do for a student to be providing the student with the toolbox to be able to solve problems effectively in the chosen subject. In addition, a tutor can provide the student with confidence and belief in oneself, which helps the student academically, and in general. My strengths as a tutor include very…

Attentive listening and keep everything simple: it's deducted from the informal tutor experience that lecturing over hours and hours isn't a good way to help the kids. I tend to ask question like "Did you get it? Was it confusing?" and using simple words to explain the concepts, instead of overwhelming them with a pile of information or technical…

Personally, the best thing a tutor can do for a student is change their perspective regarding their weak subjects, Mathematics in particular has always been a favorite of mine yet I have had students who used to start sweating whenever we pulled out the textbook. However, once they realized that Mathematics can actually be quite fun, their…

Develop their understanding of the subject. This means ensuring they understand the process and the mechanism behind a math calculation for example. This will boost their confidence in being able to answer harder questions that require this skill. Particularly for maths, the harder questions are situated in Q15 and Q16. Attaining marks in this…

A tutor's job is to fuel their students' love for learning, make them independent, and lend them a hand when it is needed. A tutor has to be available for a student and has to be a concrete source of education. I am capable of explaining a concept to students in multiple different ways, which directly aids their understanding. I am very…

The most important thing a student can do for a student is help them fully understand why a concept work rather than how to do it. If a student practices answering 100 mathematical problems without knowing how to properly solve them, sure they'll be able to solve those 100 problems but if something else is thrown their way they will have no idea…

I think that it is imperative for the tutor to try their hardest to create a passion for the subject in the student, as this will motivate them to try as hard as they can. My passion for maths not only motivated me to study but enabled me to thoroughly enjoy and look forward to every lesson. It is also important that the tutor has an open mindset…

A tutor should identify the students' areas of weakness and focus on helping the students gain knowledge in these areas rather than teaching the student what they already know. When you toss your fishing line into the water, you may have to wait hours to catch your first fish. When caring for a plant, you must water it frequently for several…

I believe a tutor can uplift the confidence of a student by encouraging him/her every step of the way which will benefit the students in their future. Inside Bardwell ValleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student William focused on converting decimals to percentages and vice versa, as well as practicing mean, mode, median, and range using real examples.

For Year 10, Sophia worked through quadratic expressions and equations—mainly factorising non-monic quadratics with the PSF method and applying the quadratic formula.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Adam revised the sine rule and its applications in trigonometry by working through textbook problems with diagrams to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student repeatedly left out written steps when solving algebra equations—he prefers to solve the question without writing it down and sometimes he makes mistakes because of that—leading to missed negative signs.

In Year 12 Advanced English, another avoided concise phrasing in short answers, making exam responses less focused under time pressure.

For a younger student, messy formula layout during surface area questions made it difficult to check work later.

Meanwhile, one Year 11 student forgot calculators for multiple lessons, limiting progress on trig and differentiation drills. These habits caused delays and extra corrections during sessions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Bardwell Valley noticed a big shift with Milo (Year 11): after previously hesitating on geometry questions, he now independently solves complex financial maths problems and can write equations of lines without prompting.

Meanwhile, Benjamin (Year 10) surprised his tutor by confidently tackling normal distribution formulas—he'd struggled before but now rarely needs help to get started.

On the primary side, Leona (Year 4) showed new focus and independence; she finished mixed fraction conversions mostly on her own after usually needing step-by-step support. Last session, she chose to attempt extra questions herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Arncliffe Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Athelstane Public School.
