In my opinion, the most important thing is to understand the critical role a tutor plays in the development of the student. Maintaining dignity for the student while they learn is important in developing intellect as well as confidence in their ability to complete tasks to the best of their ability, or even the courage to have a try regardless of…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build confidence. When students believe in their abilities, they’re more willing to engage with the material, take risks, and ask questions. Confidence can transform a student’s approach to learning, making them more resilient in the face of challenges. By providing support,…

The most important thing a Tutor can do for a student is support them through their learning. Every person has different strenghts and weaknesses and I know it can be very frustrating when you dont understand something. when you have the support from a tutor, it can help take that frustration away and make it easier to learn. My strengths as a…

The biggest thing a tutor can do is create a urge or love for the subject. I will only have limited amount of time with them, so creating self motivation will help them be better. Most students who score very high marks most often love te subject which causes them to work harder without realising it because it is not hard work but it becomes fun…

I believe that a tutor should foremost, teach their student to learn to love the subject. They should show their passion through their teaching so that their student will feel the same way about the subject. A tutor should be persistent, they should find different methods to teach their student if they do not grasp the topic well. They should also…

Understand what their problem is and where they are struggling is truly important as it can provide the fundamentals of teaching a certain topic or skill for the student to learn. Adapting to students knowledge and way they learn is also important as a student could be a practical learner with real life examples or a theoretical learner,…

It is important the the tutor teaches in a way that allows the student to learn, using patience, understanding and compassion. It is also important that the tutor can adapt to the students style of learning, allowing for them to set the pace and ensuring they understand before moving on to further content. The most important think a tutor can do is teach, not tell. Its easy to give information, tips for studying etc, but to get the student to pay attention, be attentive and actively learn is a different story. A student that can do that will not only get better grades, do well in school etc, but also find what they are passionate about in that area.…

It is important for a tutor to provide academic guidance to students which align with the goals of each individual student. I try and get the student to do most of the thinking. I teach them the basics, with a few examples of application then get them to apply it to a question of their own so they can understand how to use the knowledge I have given them. I like to go through the basic thinking that a question needs in order to be answered. I try to get the student…

A tutor should assess a student's strengths, weaknesses, and learning style to tailor their approach accordingly. Tutors should continually assess a student's progress and adjust their teaching accordingly. Encouragement and positive reinforcement are crucial for boosting a student's confidence. A good tutor can help a student believe in…

While a tutor can't promise perfect results or guarantee the fulfilment of specific goals, they can certainly assist students in achieving them. Throughout my experience having tutors I've always seen it like this: The student is the one running the marathon, while the tutor is the Gatorade/sports drink. A tutor provides guidance and assistance…

A tutor should be able to foster the students' personal problem solving and critical thinking skills, and equip them with strategies to approach…

Inside BeaconsfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Stella focused on solving simultaneous equations using both elimination and substitution methods, as well as reviewing measurement questions involving parabolas.

For Year 10, Maddie worked through integer operations in Chapter 1A and practised applying rules for adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Alex completed a diagnostic assessment covering decimals, integers (both positive and negative), fractions, BODMAS (order of operations), and basic area and volume calculations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, he skipped showing steps in equations, which hid sign errors—this made it tough to spot where logic went off track and slowed correction.

A Year 11 student leaned heavily on mental calculations for polynomial division but left little written working; this caused confusion when revisiting the problem or checking for mistakes.

In Year 6, messy long division layout led to redoing several lines after mixing up remainders.

Another senior student avoided reviewing feedback on a completed application problem, so similar setup errors kept recurring during practice. Frustration set in as solutions seemed just out of reach.

Recent Achievements

One Beaconsfield tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rely on a "shortcut" for simultaneous equations now confidently uses both elimination and substitution methods, even checking answers independently instead of waiting for guidance.

In Year 8 maths, a student who once hesitated with fraction calculations now solves multiplication and division of fractions accurately and even simplifies before working out answers—a big shift from earlier confusion.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student recently started trying questions without giving up at the first hurdle; last week he finished an entire set of perimeter problems after initially struggling to understand the questions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bunjil Place Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Haileybury College - Berwick Boys.
