Listening and being observant. It's important to acknowledge that all students are different and how they learn will vary. So to really help a student grow and improve, I believe it is vital to understand how exactly a student learns. I believe a good tutor should be able to tailor their teaching process to fit the student. I think one of my…

I believe that active communication and listening skills is key to a students' improvement in their learning. Without it, there is no point in teaching something that is finally going to ended up misunderstood or even not understood at all. Receiving and providing active feedbacks between students and tutor is essential for the tutor to provide…

The msot influential tutors that I have had have all been there for me beyond just amademically, but also as older people I can look to for advice on various things, and that is what I think a tutor needs to have as this also aids the teaching process because students are more likely to be involved if they enjoy the classes and have that…

Being open to answering any questions that is why it is important for the tutor to know their level and teach the stuff they are confident with. I also being that the tutor should be able to empower the students and be able to talk to them at a friendly level. - Simplify the subject/topic at hand, making a very challenging topic seem approachable and solvable. - Build rapport, and perhaps gain a form of friendship, so that the learning experience seems less like teaching at school/university, and more friendly and relaxed, which is conducive to enjoyable learning. To me, tutoring is about helping students be able to confidently do difficult areas of academia, by themselves without the support of anyone else. A tutor unquestionably needs to adapt their ways of teaching to each individual student as everyone does learn in different ways. Personally, I believe essential skills of a tutor include: a passion to…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is be organised and be understanding. A tutor is unlike a classroom teacher, as we are given the opportunity to work solely 1:1 with a student. Therefore, understanding a student's needs, wants and goals is imperative. Similarly, being organised and having a clear goal is equally as important.…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do, is make the subject matter look simplified rather than daunting to the student. This would increase the student's interest in the subject and eventually get them to do their best in the subject. It could also ignite the student's passion in the subject. I would say that I am a good listener…

The most significant contribution that tutors can make to a student's education is encouraging curiosity, assurance, and self-confidence. By taking the time to work with students as individuals, tutors inspire a genuine appreciation for the…

Firstly, being kind, patient and listening to the student matters the most. This is because not everyone is the same, not everyone has the same capacity to understand and grasp the concept. One student may understand it in a minute, whereas another may take 10. So its very important that the tutor is kind, patient and listens to the student.…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to provide a sense of security for their students. This sense of security can be from academic pressures, and even in navigating academics themselves. Not only will this security foster a more productive student, but also a student who's wellbeing is nurtured as they navigate their schooling life.…

My English teachers in my final years of school showed me that putting trust in students and adapting to their individual needs is one of the best ways to help them improve. Inside Beaconsfield UpperTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Aiden practised multiplication and division with tens, as well as tackling worded problems using the BIDMAS order of operations.

For Year 9, Sarah worked on simplifying fractions and multiplying them, using step-by-step examples for clarity.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Mia focused on binomial probability and calculating confidence intervals, including margin of error, while completing SAC practice questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Physics, a student struggled with exam timing—"finishing the paper is the most important," one tutor noted, after sections on vector combinations and graphing were left incomplete.

Over-reliance on calculators in senior maths also meant basic skills weren't consolidated, slowing progress in composite function questions.

In Year 8 English, inattentiveness led to writing that lacked detail and was difficult to read; frequent distraction resulted in rushed creative tasks and minimal self-editing.

A primary student avoided working out multiplication without checking previously answered tables, so confidence and fluency with times tables lagged behind classmates during timed activities.

Recent Achievements

A Beaconsfield Upper tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to rush through physics problems is now slowing down, double-checking his work, and making far fewer calculation errors.

Another high schooler in Year 12, who once hesitated with binomial distribution and probability questions, now independently applies the right equations to solve even the trickier exam tasks.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student has started reading aloud with more fluency and takes pride in spotting and correcting sentence mistakes—whereas before, she rarely volunteered to read or self-correct. Last session, she finished her spelling homework without reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Emerald Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Beaconsfield Upper Primary School.
