I acknowledge that passing on knowledge such as how to use Pythagoras is important, I would love to inspire students to love learning and being creative in the way that approaches a math issue. When students grow up, it is not the quadratic equations or math problems that helps them to thrive in higher education and life, but it is the ability to…

I think patience is undeniably one of the most important trait a tutor can have. Apart from patience, adaptability to each student's learning requirement and having a solid foundation on the topic is equally important. A tutor should be selfless and try as much as possible to help the student in their understanding. It is also important to look…

By providing clear explanations, encouraging questions, and offering consistent support, a tutor can help students develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter. It’s essential to create a safe space where students feel comfortable expressing…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is create a supportive environment where the student feels comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. When students feel safe to learn this way, they become more engaged, motivated, and able to reach their potential. My strengths as a tutor lie in my ability to explain concepts clearly…

As all students would have different levels of understanding, the most important thing a tutor can do is to take the time to devise individual learning plans for the students, plans which suit the individual's learning style and would be most effective in seeing them reach their full intellectual capacity. Punctuality and reliability are also…

Ensure that they never feel as though they are less intelligent than another person, or that wanting/needing additional help outside of school is a bad reflection on them. There is also the need for empathy and patience when it comes to teaching someone anything new to them. Enjoying the process of teaching someone new information, as well as…

A tutor must be willing to work with and adapt for each student. It is critical to not treat tutoring as one-size-fits-all - indeed many students may be getting a tutor because standard learning methods aren't working for them. It is also essential that tutors create a safe learning space where students are free to ask questions and give opinions.…

Reiterating what I have already mentioned, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them HOW to learn and HOW to tackle future difficult areas of study. I believe the most important thing is making the student feel comfortable with you, but also maintaining an atmosphere of "work time" so that the session is as productive as possible. An understanding that children, especially younger ones, cannot focus on tedious tasks as well as adults want them to, is very important to have as a tutor. Breaking…

Giving your student confidence and guidance is key. When teaching a concept, the biggest part in my mind is not only being able to establish an understanding for the concept to the student, but for the student to feel confident in their own knowledge. That initial growth in confidence in a subject is usually what fuels later motivation and…

Meredith, Beaumaris

Inside BeaumarisTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jack focused on solving linear equations for his assignment and revisited the use of indices in measurement questions.

In Year 9, Mia tackled advanced algebraic concepts, including challenging problems from Chapter 4 and some extension work into Chapter 5, with extra emphasis on transformation of domains and ranges.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sarah concentrated on rates of change and a basic introduction to limits and derivatives, also reviewing key trigonometry concepts through recent assessment tasks.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student in maths often left working untidy, making calculation steps hard to follow—"needs to lay out his steps on paper," a tutor noted, which sometimes hid mistakes in multi-digit multiplication.

In Year 10 English, another student avoided taking notes during "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and struggled later to recall themes and character roles for essay writing.

For VCE Maths Methods, incomplete revision was evident: "needs to do the non-tech practice test tomorrow," yet missed homework meant she faced the test less prepared and more anxious about calculator skills under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Beaumaris tutoring session saw a Year 10 student who had previously struggled with essay introductions begin structuring them independently, showing much clearer arguments and linking evidence more effectively in their English work.

A Year 11 maths student, who used to hesitate when facing new topics, came prepared with her own questions for the tutor and worked through challenging rate of change problems confidently, even writing out detailed working without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student started verbalising his thought process during problem-solving—something he hadn't done before—which helped him organise his calculations more neatly and spot mistakes on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Beaumaris Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Beaumaris Primary School.
