As a student, I know a student who has difficulty in studying might feel sad and helpless. Hence, we need to empathize with their feelings first, then boost their confidence and passion for learning by giving the questions that they can answer, showing them amazing knowledge and their application in real life. The tutor should emphasize the…

As I have stated earlier, I value the most important role of any tutor to be ensuring a student's deep understanding of concepts, as from my own experience this is invaluable to their success. Also important as a tutor is making sure the student is keeping up with the rest of the class, as the majority of their learning is still in the classroom,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be to assist them in finding unique ways to remember or understand concepts. This way, the students are driven to configure their own solutions and strategies in the future when they are faced with challenges in the absence of a tutor. My greatest strength as a tutor would be that I have…

A tutor should be resourceful and be able to continuously encourage the student to achieve their goals and more. They need to be able to readily respond to all types of questions within the curriculum and about the school system (eg the VCE system) to make the student feel confident and prepared to meet their learning goals. I have experience…

Patience because it is very easy for students to get frustrated when they aren't able to immediately understand a concept. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is make the subject material engaging, fun and captivating. In my opinion, a student can only learn and develop if they choose to do so, regardless of the ability or experience of the tutor or student. Thus, by making the subject in question seem alive through enthusiasm and engagement, the student…

Actually speaking, the tutor should focus on potential development rahter than merely improving the skills of a student. It could be best tutors can adopt practices such as NLP ( neuro linguistic programming) to boost rapid learning of a student. But for that only truly commited tutors would raise their hands. Since it reqires a lot of hard yards.…

A tutor must be able to recognise exactly what the student is struggling with, and thus also be able to ameliorate this issue through their knowledge, even if it requires perseverance. A tutor must also explain every step concisely to the student, so that it can make sense to the student, not just merely to an experienced tutor. I am very good at…

I believe being empathetic with the student is the most important trait. To realise that every student has a different pace of grasping concepts and the methodologies that tutors often times apply is same for each student, which is not fair on them. As a tutor, you play an important role in a student's mentality towards education. A tutor should aim to correct the "I can't do it" mindset that many students have into an "I can't do it now, but with some guidance and work I will be able to" mindset. But a tutor should also be able to help an already excelling student to achieve higher and to…

Support. The education system can be tough, and confidence is fluid along with grades, and it is up to the tutor to remind a student of how far they have come and how capable the student is. The largest impact on results is often not the time spent studying, but the foundational pillar that is psychology as this impacts every part of education.…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, make concepts clear, and encourage independent thinking. It’s not just about giving answers, but helping them understand the process so they feel capable of tackling problems on their own. So, creating a supportive environment where they feel…

Meredith, Beaumaris

Inside BeaumarisTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jack focused on solving linear equations for his assignment and revisited the use of indices in measurement questions.

In Year 9, Mia tackled advanced algebraic concepts, including challenging problems from Chapter 4 and some extension work into Chapter 5, with extra emphasis on transformation of domains and ranges.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sarah concentrated on rates of change and a basic introduction to limits and derivatives, also reviewing key trigonometry concepts through recent assessment tasks.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student in maths often left working untidy, making calculation steps hard to follow—"needs to lay out his steps on paper," a tutor noted, which sometimes hid mistakes in multi-digit multiplication.

In Year 10 English, another student avoided taking notes during "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and struggled later to recall themes and character roles for essay writing.

For VCE Maths Methods, incomplete revision was evident: "needs to do the non-tech practice test tomorrow," yet missed homework meant she faced the test less prepared and more anxious about calculator skills under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Beaumaris tutoring session saw a Year 10 student who had previously struggled with essay introductions begin structuring them independently, showing much clearer arguments and linking evidence more effectively in their English work.

A Year 11 maths student, who used to hesitate when facing new topics, came prepared with her own questions for the tutor and worked through challenging rate of change problems confidently, even writing out detailed working without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student started verbalising his thought process during problem-solving—something he hadn't done before—which helped him organise his calculations more neatly and spot mistakes on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Beaumaris Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Beaumaris Primary School.
