I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student learn to love learning. As well as that, I believe it's important to make the student feel more confident in their abilities and help them persevere through difficult tasks. I think my strengths include understanding, compassion, being able to explain a specific process in more…

Improving the confidence of the student is key. The student should evolve to have more trust in themselves and their abilities and be able to apply this. The most important thing I could do for the student is to help them achieve their own personal best and be motivated to achieve. I am a good listener. I apply this to pinpointing the key areas…

Provide motivation and help develop a passion (or at least an appreciation) for Mathematics. Success would be more likely if the student is enjoying the subject matter. Furthering this; to teach the student confidence in their abilities and eventually be more independent in thier learning/study. It is also important that a tutor understand the…

Be available when the student needs it and care about the student's goals as much or more than the student. By knowing what the student needs, a tutor can identify the student's weaknesses and target them creatively. Recognising when a student isn't properly understanding a concept and using several different approaches to clear it up.…

To be fully supportive of the student, to fully listen and understand what they desire to achieve from tutoring, whether that be to excel or for additional support, and to always be patient while they learn. - Simplify the subject/topic at hand, making a very challenging topic seem approachable and solvable. - Build rapport, and perhaps gain a form of friendship, so that the learning experience seems less like teaching at school/university, and more friendly and relaxed, which is conducive to enjoyable learning. Making them feel safe when answering questions, even if they get the answer wrong. Because it's learning from your mistakes that allow you to learn. Also teaching them to be independent learners as it is very important for tertiary studies. Just teaching them skills they need in life to make sure they succeed further on in life. Patience,…

There are a variety of things that makes a tutor stand out and become a real teacher. One is to let the student feel comfortable enough for them to ask questions that they might feel is a basic question. Instilling confidence in them to explore without hesitation and fear is important in the students development. This will help them face their own…

A tutor must be able to connect with the student on many different levels whilst in the mean time also convey the concepts and ideas of the curriculum. I also believe that the tutor has a subjective responsibility toward each student, to be able to tailor a style of teaching for them because no two students are, or learn alike. My main strength as…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not just tell a student the answers for everything, but to teach them how to solve it for themselves, and to help them gain the skills to learn and understand on their own, so even if I stop teaching them, they will be stronger on their own. I believe my strengths lie within the mindset…

Study the student and know his or her pros and cons. I would say master the pros whilst teaching the pros. Divide the activities and show the student that learning isn't a burden its much of a relief at the end of the day because goals can be reached easier once you know better. Inside Belgrave HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel focused on building speed and confidence with times tables and practiced using coordinates, directions, and map scales.

Year 10 student Vien developed arguments for a practice essay and worked on proofreading homework in preparation for an upcoming SAC.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Isaac explored scene analysis from *The Princess Bride* in English and strengthened his skills interpreting political cartoons for argument analysis.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 English, a student hesitated to generate unique examples for essays, tending to latch onto the first idea rather than exploring a wider range—"responding to each question in an original and critical way" was a challenge noted by the tutor.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student often left writing assignments unfinished or only partially developed, especially conclusions.

In maths (Year 8), one student skipped regular practice at home and struggled to recall methods during lessons; this meant lesson time was spent re-learning instead of moving forward.

For Year 5, untidy handwriting made it hard for teachers to follow his reasoning during comprehension tasks.

Recent Achievements

A Belgrave Heights tutor noticed one high school student started proofreading their own essays for the first time, picking up on unclear paragraphs after previously submitting drafts without checking.

Another secondary student who used to hesitate with complex maths questions now works through new algebra problems independently by the end of each session, only asking for help when truly stuck.

Meanwhile, a younger student who once rushed through spelling tasks is now taking extra time to reread and correct errors, finishing her weekly exercises with noticeably fewer mistakes than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Belgrave Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Belgrave South Primary School.
