One of the foremost things a tutor can do for a student is to develop their interest in something which they have disliked or taken for granted. Another thing a tutor can do is to help them not only with their grades, but also with guiding them towards their goals and be a mentor that would inspire them to be the best of themselves. I can be…

A tutor needs to analyse and understand the way a specific student learns, and cater for that. While a tutors ability to explain a problem is important, I believe the ability to explain a problem in a variety of different ways, while also showing a student that needing help with school is completely normal, is of upmost importance. I understand…

A tutor's traditional role is to deliver a concept to a student. However I believe that they also work behind the scenes to raise a student's confidence and enjoyment in a subject. Sometimes it's the tutor that makes or breaks a student's interest and motivation to learn. I have recently just finished schooling so I am very knowledgeable of the…

As a result, I think it is important to understand how the student…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to provide the student with the tools to study and pass their assessments. The main goal for any tutor should be to help get the student to the point at which they no longer require a tutor. I am able to explain information in more than one way, and adapt my teaching methods to suit the…

To listen, and understand why a student isn't understanding a topic. Everyone is different, and tutors need to be able to adapt to everyone's own needs, and be able to find creative ways to teach them in ways they will actually learn. It is also important to ensure students go back to previous topics after learning them, to ensure long-term…

Provide an amiable and respectful environment wherein the student is comfortable enough to openly raise doubts and seek follow-up without any fear of judgement/ignorance. Build confidence – Helping students believe in themselves is just as important as helping them understand the subject. Create a safe learning space – A tutor should make students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Adapt to the student’s needs – Every student learns differently, so it’s important to be flexible…

Personally for me, the teachers at school never went into what you really need to succeed in the HSC, and being one student in a class of 30 meant most times your questions were left unanswered. Having being tutored, having someone available to ask questions that I did not understand was very helpful throughout my schooling career, and I hope to…

A tutor needs to be able to inspire a student to strive and succeed in their chosen field, while still maintaining a personal, friendly relationship with them. A tutor must help the student to understand the coursework, but more than that must teach the student how to think (not just what to think) and how to apply that knowledge in many…

Local Reviews

The process has been very straight forward so far. Our tutor was highly efficient in getting onto us initially and introducing herself. The time for tutoring has worked well and the tutor is always on time and well organised. She has connected very well with our daughter and our 14 year old is already feeling more confident, relaxed and knowledgable in her maths lessons. Thank You!
Alison, Bell Post Hill

Inside Bell Post HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Emily worked on multiplying double-digit numbers and practiced subtraction with three-digit numbers for fluency.

In Year 10, Phoebe focused on revising index laws in preparation for her upcoming exam and explored further problems involving surds.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student James tackled exponential growth and decay as a new topic and solved questions involving irrational numbers to deepen his understanding of functions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, one student often skipped writing out factorising steps, making it difficult to spot where sign errors crept in—"she jumped from question to answer without showing working," noted the tutor.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner tended to guess answers in division rather than write out their thinking; this led to repeated mistakes and less confidence when faced with new problem types.

For both, not slowing down to show reasoning meant extra time was spent reworking missed concepts instead of building on them. The sense of progress stalled each time careless layout hid avoidable slips.

Recent Achievements

A Bell Post Hill tutor recently noticed Phoebe, a senior student, move from needing help with indices and surds to handling them confidently on her own—so much so that both agreed there's no need for further sessions on those topics.

In another session, a high schooler who used to feel unsure about compound interest started volunteering to try harder exponential growth questions after clarifying misunderstandings.

Meanwhile, one Year 3 student showed a shift in attitude: previously distracted during maths practice, he now stays focused and finishes his worksheet without reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corio Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Covenant College.
