One of the most important things a tutor can do for their student is to help develop the student's confidence in their own abilities and helping them to understand the material set for them. It is also important for them to have someone they feel comfortable to ask all their questions that they may be too afraid to ask in class. I am patient,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, is to understand their obstacles, may it be a particular math topic or studying maths itself. A tutor must be able to guide their student through these obstacles in order for them to succeed in maths. By talking and discussing with the student, a tutor should be able to understand what method…

Work to build up the student's confidence. This can be done by teaching them not just how to study for a test, but how to understand the test's content. It is crucial that a student's problem solving and critical thinking skills be developed, as this enables them to approach new or harder concepts with the assurance that they have the skills to…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to be understanding. Not every student is the same and every student has different strengths and weaknesses. It is most important for a tutor to not see every student as the same but as an individual who will have different needs. Personally, through my experience as a tutor, being understanding has…

Create a space of no judgement, there are a lot of questions that students find intimidating to ask in a class environment, so as a tutor, creating a safe space for them to ask those questions is the most important goal to achieve. Not only does this allow for a further understanding of a topic, but also allows the student to be able to enjoy the…

I think the biggest benefit a tutor can have is to help instill in a student a sense of confidence in their ability to learn. Regardless of how much subject matter a student is able to retain, they will have a lot of learning to do beyond when they are being tutored, so I believe it is at least as important for students to be ‘learning how to…

A Tutor is there to unlock the potential of a student hidden in a big classroom setting. The direct help provided prompts questions and higher order thinking to benefit the student. However it's not only this but the precedent the Tutor sets for a student's study habits. A Tutor exposes the student to a wider perspective on the subject which aids…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to engage in thorough discussions about their thought processes, providing real-time feedback. This approach, which I valued greatly during my own tutoring experience in Year 12, helps students refine their problem-solving skills and deepen their understanding. A key strength of mine as a…

- Being open and being a conversationalist has to be the most important priority to ensure that the student feels comfortable enough to ask questions. I consider encouragement and clarity to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Encouraging the students to learn, to do well, and to be confident is the first step for them to gain interest and the willingness to improve. Change in accordance to what a student expresses. No one likes to be feel or be stated as dumb, a tutor should be a guide more than an instructor. A tutor can provide mentoring and perspective for a student. Tutoring in my opinion is more effective than lecturing as the student gets more individual attention. Chris is actually very happy with Shehara. He seems motivated. He's had two sessions with her and seems to like it so all good here.
Carine, Belrose

Inside BelroseTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student James worked on multiplying and dividing decimals, then applied these skills to solve perimeter and area problems.

In Year 8, Olivia practised simplifying algebraic expressions involving variables and revised indices laws using step-by-step examples.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan focused on calculus, specifically differentiation and integration, tackling both definite and indefinite integrals drawn from recent exam questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often tried to solve algebraic and unit conversion problems mentally, saying "I can do this in my head," but missing steps made it hard to spot where mistakes crept in.

In Year 12 Physics, one student overcomplicated questions on torque and the motor effect—"she kept trying to see the end before starting any working"—which led to hesitation and wasted time.

For a Year 7 learner, forgetting materials meant lost minutes at lesson start and scattered focus during BIDMAS practice.

When revision felt ineffective for a Year 9 student, motivation dropped sharply before tests.

Recent Achievements

A Belrose tutoring session saw a Year 11 student who used to rush through exam questions now carefully planning her time, leaving space for harder problems and completing all sections.

Another high schooler, previously hesitant to speak up when confused in chemistry, has started openly asking clarifying questions—this shift led her to resolve confusion around equilibrium calculations on her own last week.

In Year 4 maths, one student who often guessed at answers is now pausing to identify the perimeter or multiply by tens with confidence before attempting a solution.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

It is great to see the tutoring has been very beneficial over the time Rebecca has been helping Sophia. Rebecca is a wonderful tutor with great maths ability and has had a great rapport with Sophia, and is nice, bright and polite and extremely patient, which is what was needed. We would be happy to recommend her to anyone.

Morgan has impacted Mary's maths grade and her confidence with Maths. She is looking forward to being tutored by Morgan next year.

And on a personal note to Barry - Rob Jake and I thank him immensely for the wonderful work he has done.  Jake has now become so much more confident and is enjoying his Maths !!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Belrose Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Wakehurst Public School.
