To allow the student to learn by guiding them there. This way, I believe students are able to improve even after you’ve stopped tutoring them. In short, I believe the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student would be for tutors to ensure that students are confident in how they approach a problem. My strengths as a tutor, I would…

Whilst an understanding of the content is important, tutors should understand the way they present examples and what these examples include can stress students or cause them to have misconceptions. They should be willing to extend the understanding of students but understand the dangers of pushing a student "too hard." Personally I used to be…

Not only with their work but confidence in the fact that their tutor is able to accurately educate them and use that information at school or university My biggest strength as a tutor is certainly my ability to adapt my lessons accordingly. This means if I notice a student struggling to understand my…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to offer help which is tailored to the student's specific needs. This is not usually done in classes as teachers have a large number of students and cannot always pitch their lessons at the right level for everybody. A tutor,on the other hand, who works with a small group of students,…

Encouragement and patience. Through personal experience, even if the student improve their score by 1% from their last test, this is enough of an encouragement for them to push harder and let them know you will be their for them anytime when they are stuck or needing help. I believe that teachers/tutors make the greatest impact on a developing child or young adult's mind. Apart from the child's family, a teacher/tutor has the most influential face to face contact with a student, where it be as a mentor or as a friend. Hence, I strongly feel that tutors have the opportunity and responsibility to educate and develop a…

I think the most important job of a maths tutor is to help the student, not just in answering questions, but by giving them a fundamental understanding of the content that they would be able to reapply to many other questions, particularly ones that are curveballs. Apart from that, giving them the belief that they can do well if they just apply…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to like a teacher equip students with the ability and tools to approach the problem. Rather than rote learning, giving students the tools allows them to approach problems that they may not have seen as well as that which they had prepared for. Giving your student confidence and guidance is key. When teaching a concept, the biggest part in my mind is not only being able to establish an understanding for the concept to the student, but for the student to feel confident in their own knowledge. Inside BentleighTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Anna practised converting between fractions and decimals as well as solving measurement problems involving area.

For Year 8, Tom focused on graphing linear relations and working through equations and inequalities using real-life examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia revised trigonometric relationships by connecting sine, cosine, and tangent values with angles, alongside applying the Pythagoras' theorem to a variety of questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often left out written working in algebra, as noted: "need practise showing 'working' when solving any mathematical problems," which led to hidden errors and slower correction.

In Year 10 trigonometry, confusion between values and angles persisted—"easy to get distracted most of the time"—especially with radians.

A younger student repeatedly forgot the multiplication tables during fraction work, making even basic calculations slow.

For several sessions, a Year 7 did not bring required materials like textbooks or exercise books; this meant missed practice opportunities and incomplete follow-up on geometry concepts discussed in lessons.

Recent Achievements

One Bentleigh tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who'd always hesitated to speak up when stuck with algebra now confidently asks clarifying questions before attempting problems—something she never did last term.

In another session, a Year 11 student who previously made frequent errors graphing trigonometric equations managed to solve and graph each type correctly on her own, only double-checking answers at the end.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who often mixed up fractions and decimals is now reliably converting percentages to fractions without prompting and can explain each step aloud as he works.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bentleigh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Paul's School.
