The most important things are to provide guidance and nurture their motivation so that they can accomplish their educational goals. The challenges that the students face with a subject can only be overcome by the students. Tutors can assist by explaining the concepts and providing examples, but the students' motivation is necessary as only then…

Kids' attention span are short and I think the most important thing a tutor can do for the tutees/students is to be compassionate. Compassion will cover patience and understanding the reason why we are teaching. Kids will be kids and they can get naughty and noisy at times. But it is and will always be part of tutoring, you just need to calmly get…

A tutor is both an academic teacher, and a mentor. A tutor not only teaches students about the topics students are struggling with or need to learn, tutors should also be a students mentor. This can be about advice on how to manage time, commit to a work/life balance, reduce the feeling of stress and anxiety about studies or upcoming exams and so…

As a tutor I believe, anything that a student brings up during the session regarding their studies which they are finding hard to understand in school. a tutor should be able to help them no matter what as they’re the second option to go and ask help to after they’re teachers Listening to what children are trying to say. Figuring out what is…

Most importantly a tutor should understand the goals and needs of each student individually - what they find difficult and why they struggle with certain concepts. Subsequently, tutors should teach students the concepts and ensure they understand how to solve problems, this provides lifelong problem solving skills rather than memorised methods to…

A tutor can train students to think, learn, and problem solving which are key skills in human learning, and especially significant in mathematical problem solving. A tutor should take the time to understand each student's unique strengths, weaknesses, learning styles, and goals. This enables the tutor to tailor their teaching approach and materials to meet the student's specific needs. Moreover, a tutor should encourage active learning by engaging students in discussions, asking questions, and involving them…

Inside Berkshire ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sienna has been working on number families, the split and compensation strategies for addition and subtraction, and strengthening multiplication tables knowledge.

In Year 9, Chitleen focused on persuasive writing techniques using the PEEL structure and analysed film and language techniques from "Rabbit Proof Fence" as well as literary themes in "Vertigo."

For Year 10 maths, Justin tackled quadratic equations and graphs, including gradients and intercepts, using pen-and-paper methods to reinforce graphing skills.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3 English, one student's writing showed difficulty organizing ideas into clear paragraphs; as noted, "he needs a system to create stories or paragraphs," and struggled with basic punctuation.

This often left sentences running together, making it hard for readers to follow his meaning.

In Year 9 Maths, another student repeatedly put off homework tasks—one tutor wrote, "needs to do homework better, procrastination"—resulting in missed opportunities to consolidate new concepts like trigonometry rules.

A Year 11 student relied heavily on calculators but found non-calculator questions much harder, slowing problem-solving and limiting independence during assessments.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Berkshire Park noticed a big shift for one high school student who used to hesitate during essay writing; now, she drafts body paragraphs independently and experiments with creative techniques for her Macbeth assignment.

Another secondary student made progress by moving from last place to first within his rank at school, after struggling with written expression—he's now able to express ideas more quickly and describe details more clearly in his stories.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who once guessed quietly when unsure has started asking questions out loud whenever she hits trouble, recently solving fraction word problems on her own.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We've had 2 sessions with Hyolie and I find her very knowledgeable and organised. My daughter is comfortable with her, so far so good.

Zac is progressing well and is enjoying his tutoring with Emily.  He has clicked with her and they seem to be working well together.

We really like Mark, his communication style really suits Remy, and he is able to work out what she needs very quickly. We would love to stay with him until the end of the year. They are a good match. Thank you

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hawkesbury Central Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Northbourne Public School.
