I think that as a tutor, we should be different from teachers at school. We should provide extra care to their needs and catering to what areas of a particular topic they are struggling with, in order for them to improve. Therefore, I think that conducting a personalized teaching plan for the students to observe and explore what methods they can…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to teach a student how to pursue their own studies, that is, if I can teach a student how to study without the need for a tutor, that's worth more than tutoring them the whole year and it will serve them well for the rest of their life. An excellent tutor will keep their students motivated and…

A tutor can change a student's perspective towards studies and make difficult subjects easy for them. Thereby boosting a student's confidence in the subject, which enables them to further share this knowledge with fellow classmates when they have a difficulty. I am very patient and willing to explain the concepts again and again with examples till…

Provide the student with confidence in their own learning ability. Helping students find learning methods that work for THEM, which they can continue to use in the future is the most important thing, and also the most satisfying thing for me as tutor. I think students would appreciate when tutors can find a suitable and effective style of elaborating problem-solving methods to them, and then further gain the ability to solve similar questions without additional help. I am very patient and enthusiastic about helping students figure out solutions to questions. I can also offer remote tutoring…

Besides achieving acad3mic grades, i believe teaching the kids about respect and boundaries are just as important. The best way to teach them this is froma young age so they can properly grow into a respectable adult Since i am not too old yet, i believe i can connect with the kids better than most people. I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping them achieve the results they want to pave the way for future career pathways. This can be achieved by maximising a student's potential through motivation, encouragement, and engaging them with the content that you are tutoring them for. There is nothing worse than just…

Be empathetic and put yourself in the shoes of the student whole teaching them, to understand how they view the subject at hand and how you can help them understand it better. It's also important to be well prepared and to be willing to listen to the student's ideas and concerns and open to research anything needed in more depth to help the…

A tutor's primary objective is to ensure that the student truly understands the content, and while doing so, the tutor must present the material in an interesting and engaging manner. I think the most important is to follow the students lead. They will often know their weaknesses and from spending time working with them, you can take note of possible areas of improvement. However, at the end of the day you are there to help the student so by listening and communicating effectively both parties will be satisfied. The ability to…

I believe it is most important to build a student's confidence. Once they believe they can achieve things on their own, and develop an interest in the subject, higher grades will follow. To be an effective tutor, it is essential to focus on three critical aspects. Firstly, a tutor should be able to create a personalized learning experience that caters to the unique needs and learning style of each student. Secondly, building a strong rapport with the student is essential in fostering a positive and supportive learning environment,…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not merely give additional lessons, but connect with them to gauge their individual skills and aid in further establishing them. Good grades would be the obvious answer. However, if I can spark an interest in the subject for the student the grades will logically follow. A strength would definitely be communication, I find that I can easily get my point across eloquently. I also take pride in my etiquette and friendliness. A weakness that I can see being an issue is lesson…

Inside BictonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Xavier focused on adding and subtracting larger numbers, practising three-digit addition and takeaways to build confidence with bigger values.

In Year 7, Alice revised converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages as well as tackling measurement conversions such as millimetres to kilometres using real-world examples.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Max worked through algebraic equations involving variables alongside adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions that include variables.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, one student struggled to set out addition and subtraction clearly, often omitting working for multi-step problems—she sometimes is too quick to give an answer or gets confused about what number is used for what part of solving the question.

In Year 8, a student's decimals work was held back by difficulty lining up columns when adding or subtracting, making errors harder to spot.

For a senior student (Year 10), test revision focused only on familiar fraction types; less time went into practicing new question formats.

When homework was missed without notice in Years 7 and 9, gaps in skill development persisted into following lessons.

Recent Achievements

A Bicton tutor noticed a big shift in one high school student, Poppy, who previously hesitated with algebra but now rearranges equations on her own and is even tackling multiplication with brackets—something she used to avoid.

Another secondary student, Chloe, moved from needing hints to solve improper-to-mixed fraction questions to working through most of them confidently and making only minor mistakes.

With a younger learner, Xavier, sessions have focused on building independence; he now counts digits without being prompted and tries new problems solo instead of waiting for help. Last week, he finished all his addition exercises unassisted.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as AH Bracks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bicton Primary School.
