The most important things a tutor can do is ensure that the student has a clear understanding, by aiding them at anytime outside of tute sessions. Specifically for maths, a tutor can teach a student all the possible methods to get to the answer, allowing the student to decide which method is best suited for them My biggest strength is my…

There are different ways in which a person will understand. Hence, a good tutor should know which approach to use so that studies become fun and concepts become their partners for life time. - Innovative…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to support them along their learning journey. Learning is not a linear experience and it does take a lot of patience, time, and effort, and as a tutor, it is important to guide and support their student throughout the journey. It is also important to be a mentor and someone that the…

As a tutor one should be patient and flexible so that the student fully benefits from your lesson. Ultimately the classes are for imparting knowledge to the students. So ensuring that the student understands the lessons and have a proper take away is extremely important. As a tutor, I would rate effective communication and ease with which I can…

Students who need a tutor have different problems. They may be not so confident with their self-study or their academic performance. Therefore, the most important things I would try to deliver to my students are my strategies and plans which will be tailored for each of them to reach their own goals and meet their own needs. I respect my students…

The most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, foster independent learning, and create a safe space where they feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. It’s not just about teaching content, but about empowering students to believe in themselves and their ability to improve. My biggest strengths as…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them understand the concepts pertaining to the subject they teach, so that the students can understand the subject better instead of making them memorize stuff. I am a really patient and understanding individual. To teach or tutor anyone, one should be patient enough to explain the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen. Is there a way the student feels they learn better? Perhaps through pictures instead of words? Is the student not focussed and extremely tired? Would it be more productive to learn outside in the backyard or reschedule for another day? Students are young, but they are young adults.…

In my opinion, a tutor is able to change the perspective of a student towards a particular subject completely. It is true that in the end, it's the student's effort that makes them perform well but on the other hand, a tutor can make the student put in the effort, and make the student enjoy what he is studying. I know that I can get through to…

To provide useful problem-solving tips that students can easily pick up and apply. 3. Continuously give students sense of achievements by helping them…

Resilience after drawbacks. I think developing a friendly relationship is one of the most important things a tutor can do. By doing this, students feel more confident and happy to truly engage with their tutor, ask any questions they possibly could have, which I think ultimately leads to better learning. As a tutor, you can\'t approach each student as if they are the same person learning the same subject. Each individual has different weaknesses and strengths. For a tutor to recognise this fact is detrimental to ensuring the tutor can target each student\'s weaknesses effectively instead of wasting time. Having been a student myself, I know time…

Inside BlackburnTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 Carla focused on polynomial operations and transformations to prepare for her upcoming SAC, including practice questions on both topics.

For Year 11 Ethan, recent lessons included mastering long division and factor theorem with polynomials, plus interpreting and sketching square root graphs and hyperbolas.

Meanwhile, Year 12 Ava worked through differentiation by first principles as well as applications such as finding the equations of tangents and normals to curves.

Recent Challenges

During a Year 11 test preparation, one student's "rushed approach" and rapid self-questioning led to errors, particularly when tackling polynomial long division—"he was eager to start but skipped clarifying his plan."

In Year 9 mathematics, another student hesitated to build her summary book or organize earlier notes, making it harder to recall older concepts during revision.

For a Year 12 assessment, an over-reliance on calculators meant she missed key steps in graph transformations by not setting out working clearly.

These habits left students feeling unprepared and less confident as exam dates approached.

Recent Achievements

One Blackburn tutor noticed that Lachlan, a high school student, has become much more confident with statistics—he now interprets histograms and calculates measures like mean and quartiles almost independently, whereas he used to hesitate with these.

In another session, Haydn showed real growth by recognising mistakes in graphing questions without prompting; previously, he'd just move on if something felt tricky.

For a younger student, Carla demonstrated new initiative by asking for clarification whenever she got stuck instead of staying silent—a big shift from earlier lessons where she rarely spoke up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blackburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Blackburn Primary School.
