Making sure that the student fully understands what was taught is the most important above all. A tutor should not just present a lesson and slip away. He should be more interactive, address the questions of the student, and give his best effort to repeat the parts not understood by the student in other simpler smart approaches. A tutor should…

A tutor must be able to not simply teach a subject but also create a desire for learning and must be able to do both to effectively teach. I also think that a tutor should be able to build on previously known concepts by the student and be able to articulate ideas in different ways to enhance their understanding of a topic. My strengths lie in my…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to connect with their students and find the best teaching method for each student. Otherwise, the student is not getting 100% out of the lesson and will not understand the subject to his or her full ability. All students and particularly the younger ones, they can often get frustrated or intimidated when they do not understand a concept. According to me two most important principles in a tutor are patience and trust. Building trust makes the student feel comfortable enough to ask questions, make mistakes. Having patience also goes a long way in building that trust, so that the student can actually enjoy the learning process. I believe I can bring value to the role through my…

It is to emphatize and to have patience with the student. Not everyone has the same learning curve. Other people learn faster than the others. It is common to get frustrated when your student is not understanding what you are trying to teach him/her, however, do not let your students feel and see that. It may not only hurt their self-confidence…

Inside BlacktownTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Josh worked on converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages as well as calculating GST and understanding price changes.

In Year 9, Chloe revised Pythagoras' theorem alongside practice with coordinate geometry—specifically finding midpoints and distances between points using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Abby tackled genetic technologies for an assessment task, breaking down the implications of gene therapy for Spinal Muscular Atrophy and clarifying the relationship between genotypes and phenotypes.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student arrived without a textbook or reference materials, making it difficult to engage fully with the lesson content.

In Year 9, one student struggled to keep up with classwork and admitted to not completing assignments on time—"he has not been keeping up with class work which is something we need to work on."

For a Year 11 Biology session, messy note-taking and trouble organizing research made revision harder; she often forgot definitions and key terms during review.

In senior years, difficulties in breaking down exam questions led to hesitation when answering under timed conditions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Blacktown recently noticed some great progress with students across different year levels.

In Year 4 maths, Chloe had struggled to remember her times tables, but after steady practice, she could recall the 7 and 8 times tables from memory and applied them to fraction problems with much more ease than before.

At the high school level, Josh moved from needing step-by-step help to solving most trigonometry questions independently; last session he even corrected his own mistakes without prompting.

Meanwhile, Abby began structuring her biology assessment responses more clearly after learning to highlight key words for each dot point.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Everything seems to be going well so far. Karl seems super smart and very friendly and Gabriel gets along with him well.

Jacques seems quite happy with the 3 weeks tutoring he has had and when asked says he is enjoying the lessons. So a good start.

Sophie is responding to Rounak very well. Rounak is a great teacher and Sophie gets along well with him. We're all very happy!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lalor Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Patrician Brothers' College Blacktown.
