There are many important things a tutor can do for their students however, the greatest thing is being a supportive role model. If the student is able to respect and understand their tutor, there is a high chance that student looks up to that tutor. Therefore, it is important that the tutor can develop a professional relationship with the student…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to: 1) Build strong, personal relationships with their students: a tutor should personalize the learning, make learning more interesting for the student, and teach to the student's strengths while minimizing their weaknesses. 2) Focus on goal setting, and creating benchmarks. Being more approachable and trying to match their level of understanding to find a better approach for studying is important. Every person is different and so is their understanding and learning level. Being able to match that level and teach them is the job of a tutor. I can be a good listener and am able to identify problems of students as I…

As I alluded to earlier, I think the student's enjoyment is extremely important. That's not to say that they should be having fun at the expense of gaining knowledge, much the contrary; I think the best way for a student to gain knowledge that will last beyond the next test or exam is to have it conveyed in such a way that they take a genuine…

I think spending time to change your whole approach of teaching because one of your student is unable to understand the whole content. The tutor's objective is not simply to relay information to a student in a bland or dry manner, but rather to establish a solid foundation and understanding for the students - to devise a teaching method that works best. The objective is for the student to learn in the most efficient and enjoyable manner. I am a University lecturer and a senior…

I believe that in order for anyone to understand the material being taught - the tutor must begin with the fundamentals and basics; breaking down the information and then ensuring the student is able to explain it back is what I believe works best. This requires patience, which I believe is an essential quality a tutor must maintain in order for…

In my opinion the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to set the student up in a positive mindset towards learning. Give moral support and guidance. As a tutor, I don't give answers or solve the student's work, I want them to be able to solve it themselves and use their critical thinking skills with their knowledge of subject content. Subjects can be tough, as a tutor, I need to find ways to convey the same subject in an easier, convenient way to understand it.…

A tutor has to be patient and welcoming for their students. The reason these students come for tutoring is because they face difficulty keeping up with school. So they should be given the space to understand at their own pace, in their own method and a teacher needs to recognize that. We need to recognize the method which we choose to teach a…

A tutor needs to help identify a student's strong points and motivate the students in every possible way. It's not always the tutor that should be valued and respected but the students also needs the same respect and care. Inside BolivarTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Tom focused on calculating area for both simple and composite shapes, as well as reviewing key area formulas.

Year 9 student Archie worked through simplifying ratios and revisited BIDMAS and fractions after receiving his test results.

Meanwhile, Isobel in Year 10 tackled converting fractions to percentages alongside practising addition and subtraction with fractions, using real-world examples where possible.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3 maths, a student often left place value work incomplete and struggled to justify number patterns—"she can answer but doesn't understand why," noted a tutor. This made follow-up questions on sequences difficult.

By Year 7, another student hesitated to talk through problem-solving steps in composite shapes, preferring to guess rather than explain reasoning, which led to confusion when units or operations were missed.

In senior years (Year 11), heavy reliance on calculators replaced working out multiplication by hand, especially during exam-style questions; as one tutor observed, "she wasn't confident with arithmetic and defaulted straight to the calculator."

Recent Achievements

A Bolivar tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to rush through maths problems and overlook mistakes; now, she's gotten into the habit of backchecking her work and caught every error herself last session.

Another high school student recently began talking through his approach out loud—he'd usually stay quiet and guess before, but now he explains his thinking and spots where he might go wrong.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once struggled with reading analogue clocks can now both read times accurately and confidently draw clock hands when asked.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burton Community Hub Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like The Pines School.
