A tutor, in my opinion, helps the student build on what they have already covered in their schools. Sometimes, it's all about helping them further their understanding and establishing strong connections between the concepts taught in class and the activities in their everyday life and tailor the content according to their level of understanding…

The most important thing a tutor can give to a student, I would say is give hope and ease the path they are taking. I have been teaching and mentoring for more than 7 years, and it is nice to see where my students have reached. It is a really nice feeling, when you know your students are doing well in terms of education as well as the mental…

A tutor should communicate clearly, break down complex concepts, and adapt to a student’s learning style to make learning more effective. Equally important is creating a supportive environment that relieves stress, builds confidence, and encourages critical thinking to help students overcome difficulties One of my biggest strengths as a tutor is…

I believe it is very important for a tutor to empower students and allow them to feel confident in their own ability to learn and succeed in their academic career. It is important for tutors to nurture intrinsic motivation within their students to allow them to feel validated by their own personal growth. As a tutor, one of my strengths would be…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is probably stay for a bit longer with the student to help with any questions that the student may ask. Taking some of time to also explain to the student even after the session has been completed. Another important thing is to build a friendly environment for the student, and become…

I believe one of the most crucial things a tutor can do for a student is to make the learning process both engaging and enjoyable. By creating an interactive and lively learning environment, students are more likely to develop a genuine interest in the subject matter. This interest is important for deep learning and long-term retention of…

Tutors can do so much for students. To choose a few, a tutor should be honest and always try their best to educate and assist the student to their best capacity. Moreover, allowing the student to be okay with failing and making mistakes as part of the journey without feeling ashamed is critical to building their self-confidence and understanding…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is really listen to what they have to say and be patient. Some students may have the right idea in essence but not the right answer. It from building their idea to make them realise how close they are to having the right answer to the question. Shutting down a student and giving them…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to foster understanding and build confidence. We have to provide baby steps so they can walk on their own. The most important thing a tutor can do is to personalise your teaching. The kids are not always going to like one style of teaching, and it is best to identify their needs and wants in order to tailor your teaching to ensure they have the best quality experience. Additionally, the best thing a tutor can do is to be patient. Every student is…

Inviting kids to have a safe environment is very important as kids will be comfortable in making mistakes which often allow them to learn the content. I think it is very important to teach a student or allow a student to learn their teaching style as it often stays with them throughout their life improving their ability to comprehend a lot.…

As a tutor, our main obligation is to implement methods of teaching that allows students to understanding the materials in a way that isnt too complex, but at the sametime, yields the required results when the time comes around. Key to the student's success is built on having someone that they can turn to if they require advice or support, not…

Felicity has a been a great tutor with Eliana, she is always punctual and patient and tries to accomodate changing schedules when needed. She has worked with Eliana in a number of areas and I can see that she too is learning how to adjust her teaching to suit the needs of Eliana when teaching new skills. We appreciate the time she has provided Eliana this year and have seen her confidence and fluency in mathematics improve. Eliana feels comfortable with Felicity and they have developed a warm friendship over the year.

Inside Bonnyrigg HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jonathon practised identifying and calculating medians, then began introductory algebra questions.

Year 9 student Sarah worked through surface area and volume problems for prisms and cylinders, plus solved multiple choice questions on quadratic equations and finding intercepts.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael focused on graphing linear equations using point-slope form and tackled circle equations by finding the standard equation and sketching circles from given information.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Mathematics, a student relied heavily on the quadratic formula without backchecking, which, as noted by the tutor, "meant mistakes went unnoticed until the end of the problem."

In Year 9 English, another student hesitated to write out answers independently and waited for approval before proceeding; this slowed progress in short answer tasks.

For a Year 8 student learning probability, uncertainty about drawing tree diagrams led to confusion—especially when filling in branches after the first event.

Meanwhile, in Year 3 numeracy lessons, skipping over numbers when counting past tens made it hard to master larger number patterns.

Recent Achievements

A Bonnyrigg Heights tutor recently saw a Year 10 student shift from quietly guessing at answers to openly asking for help when stuck on algebraic formulas, leading her to solve simultaneous equations without prompting.

Another high schooler, after struggling with short answer writing in English, began self-editing his work and submitted homework that needed almost no corrections—a big step up from needing every sentence checked last term.

Meanwhile, a younger student who used to seem distracted during maths lessons now answers number pattern questions correctly even while fidgeting, showing he's processing the material more deeply than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Valley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bonnyrigg Heights Public School.
