Help them enjoy learning. The role of a tutor should be to engage the student and make the learning process fun, encouraging them to put more effort into their learning, consequently improving their results. As well as this, it is vital that a tutor guide the student to a solution rather than simply giving them the answer, allowing them to…

So far so good, Amelia was really happy and says James is sooooo smart! That's an excellent start so we will see how it goes at once a week and take it from there.

Inside Booker BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Zac worked on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions—including mixed and improper forms—and practiced using keywords like "of" for multiplication in sentence questions.

In Year 8, Yillen focused on applying Pythagoras' Theorem to solve right-angled triangle problems and explored how perimeter and area relate to these triangles.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ava tackled finding unknown angles in right-angle triangles using both the Pythagorean theorem and SOHCAHTOA, working through targeted homework questions for practice.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student left notes and workbooks at school, making it hard to revise for an exam—this meant no clear reference point when trying unfamiliar questions.

In Year 11, one student relied on a calculator that "seemed a little off," which led to confusion over unexpected answers during trig problems.

Another in Year 7 avoided writing full working for SOHCAHTOA rearrangements; as the tutor put it, "she skipped steps, so sign errors weren't caught."

A Year 3 learner mixed up tens and tenths when rounding decimals—her working was messy and hard to follow, leading to repeated corrections mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Booker Bay tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to wait for prompts now volunteering answers during trigonometry sessions, even explaining how he solved problems with SOHCAHTOA—something he'd previously avoided.

A Year 8 student, after struggling with rearranging formulas and substituting values, surprised her tutor by independently working through several algebraic word problems without needing reminders.

In a primary session, a quiet Year 4 learner who was hesitant to ask questions started drawing out currency diagrams herself to tackle addition and subtraction tasks, showing real initiative by choosing strategies from past lessons.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Thank you so much for your assistance over the past months. Alex has progressed quite well and is getting more enjoyment out the subject given that he now has a better grasp of it.

Thank you for this.  We are extremely happy with Jason. He has a lot of patience with Sarah and  a genuine interest in helping her in Maths.  Sarah is slowly getting more confident in maths and this is a big step.

Thanks for the reports. Michael is fantastic. James and I both really like him and he is a very dedicated and diligent tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Umina Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ettalong Public School.
