The most important things a tutor can do for a student extend beyond simply imparting knowledge. Firstly, a tutor should strive to cultivate a supportive and encouraging learning environment, where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Building confidence is key to academic success. Secondly, a tutor should tailor their…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to be very clear and not convoluted when explaining topics, equations, etc. to students, as it can be very easy to get intimated as a student and end up confused. I believe it is also important not to assume any knowledge straight away from students but to intentionally ask what it is that they…

I consider the time and space a tutor gives to the student the most important thing. It is all about what they, as the student, are comfortable with. However, this does not stop another important aspect; pushing a student through their limits in order to achieve their goals. These are the most important things a tutor can do for a student. I…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to make the student feel understood, build their confidence, and explain concepts in a way that truly makes sense to them. As someone who is still a student myself, I know how overwhelming things can get, so I try to create a comfortable space where they are not afraid to ask questions or make…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them see their academic potential and develop a love of learning. It is crucial as students go through schooling to see the benefits of learning and develop a strong work ethic. I believe all children learn at an individual pace and that it is critical to have patience and…

I consider a tutor responsibility towards students is to be committed and flexible. The tutor should be with their student even if both have been going through the exam period. The tutor should never cancel on a lesson with a student for their own studies. As well, it is a must to be patient towards the student and be flexible as a tutor to learn…

First and foremost it would be building a strong rapport with the student and gaining mutual trust and respect. This builds a foundation of confidence and comfort which optimises a students ability to learn and their attitude towards learning. Tutors should be adaptable and be able to target the teaching to each students unique way of learning. …

I think the most important thing is to encourage a student to be independent and learning how to solve their own problems. So, by not giving them the answers outright but ensuring that they are taught key methods that enable them to solve their own issue is very important especially in the long term. It is important to build a relationship with the student and to always guide them but not push them to their limits. It is also important that the student understands how its done, while having them memorise a pattern is easy, allowing them to understand how to solve these types of questions will allow them to apply their solution to more things.…

Taking initiative to bring the student out of their comfort zone. In a lot of cases, students fear showing their lack of knowledge, especially in group settings. Above all else, I believe a tutor should prioritise student wellbeing. Beyond academic achievement, it's essential to foster a sense of belonging, confidence and self-worth in each student. This involves attentive listening, emotional support, and creating a safe, judgement-free space. Additionally, empowering students to take ownership of their…

Inside BooragoonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Lillie worked through patterns and algebra, plus location and transformations using tailored questions to target areas needing improvement.

For Year 8 Matteo, the session focused on linear lines and solving simultaneous equations, including test-style problems for practice.

Year 10 Olivia reviewed past measurement tests—covering perimeter, area, surface area, and volume—and then revised probability concepts such as Venn diagrams and two-way tables to strengthen understanding before her upcoming assessment.

Recent Challenges

Several process habits need attention across year levels.

A Year 8 student repeatedly ran out of time in tests, with the tutor noting, "a lot of questions that weren't answered were due to running out of time."

For a Year 10 learner, messy or incomplete working—especially skipping steps in algebra—meant errors went unnoticed until review.

In one senior session, failure to bring required textbooks and materials led to lost learning opportunities; as observed: "needs to bring textbook to tutoring sessions."

Meanwhile, a primary student's homework was not completed before the lesson, resulting in half the session being spent catching up instead of moving forward.

Recent Achievements

One Booragoon tutor recently saw a Year 11 student take real initiative by starting a daily journal to track tricky economics topics, something he hadn't done before, which helped him recall key concepts for his final exam.

A high schooler who used to hesitate when stuck on maths questions now openly talks through her problem-solving steps and cross-checks answers aloud, rather than staying silent or guessing.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who often rushed her homework has begun completing all assigned work independently and on time—last week she handed in every task without reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Civic Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Booragoon Primary School.
