One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is provide a structured learning environment. Often, the biggest source of exam-related stress is feeling overwhelmed by the amount of material and not seeing the connections between topics. A tutor should help students make sense of this by summarizing key concepts and looking ahead,…

Tutoring is not like formal teaching in the school where we teach concepts, assigns activity, monitor assess student’s academic learning. Tutoring is completely focused on what the particular student wishes to progress in; helping students in the area they aren’t confident about, making students to set a goal and achieve the target with…

Most important thing for any tutor is to understand their student well. If they know the students quite well only then they could develop the educational materials and classes that caters the student's need. I believe in supporting young minds to discover their innate potential to learning because knowing is only a means to reach ones way of being. Therefore, the role of a tutor/teacher, to me, is to facilitate the learning. I can easily get along with young minds. I am excellent in simplifying complex concepts to relatable examples so that my…

I believe a tutor should teach a student how to love a subject instead of do it. For a student to be able to realise why they adore the subject and why they are studying it in the first place. A tutor should try their best to allow their students to feel like they are in a safe place, where they can ask any questions and feel free without feeling…

To be supportive and try to put in the place of student to understand his/her problem. A tutor must guide the students using different approaches to relate the topics with his surroundings. A tutor plays a crucial role in shaping the moral values and basic manners of a student's life. Although tutoring primarily focuses on academics, I believe that tutors can significantly influence a student's overall development. Rather than treating the class as a whole, a tutor should give individual attention to each student, understanding their…

Michael Moore, Booragoon

Inside BooragoonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Lillie worked through patterns and algebra, plus location and transformations using tailored questions to target areas needing improvement.

For Year 8 Matteo, the session focused on linear lines and solving simultaneous equations, including test-style problems for practice.

Year 10 Olivia reviewed past measurement tests—covering perimeter, area, surface area, and volume—and then revised probability concepts such as Venn diagrams and two-way tables to strengthen understanding before her upcoming assessment.

Recent Challenges

Several process habits need attention across year levels.

A Year 8 student repeatedly ran out of time in tests, with the tutor noting, "a lot of questions that weren't answered were due to running out of time."

For a Year 10 learner, messy or incomplete working—especially skipping steps in algebra—meant errors went unnoticed until review.

In one senior session, failure to bring required textbooks and materials led to lost learning opportunities; as observed: "needs to bring textbook to tutoring sessions."

Meanwhile, a primary student's homework was not completed before the lesson, resulting in half the session being spent catching up instead of moving forward.

Recent Achievements

One Booragoon tutor recently saw a Year 11 student take real initiative by starting a daily journal to track tricky economics topics, something he hadn't done before, which helped him recall key concepts for his final exam.

A high schooler who used to hesitate when stuck on maths questions now openly talks through her problem-solving steps and cross-checks answers aloud, rather than staying silent or guessing.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who often rushed her homework has begun completing all assigned work independently and on time—last week she handed in every task without reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Civic Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Booragoon Primary School.
