Sometimes students are going through external things that may affect their progress. Slow progress does not always mean that they are not trying. The most important thing in my opinion is motivating them so that they believe that if they try their best they will be more than happy with the results. I am extremely patient and I am great at getting…

Help them become enthusiastic about learning, and change how they see what they are capable of. I am good at improving a students ability to learn. I think as a tutor it is important to make sure your students feel safe and supported at all times. It is also important to not belittle students but rather always encourage them no matter what. Teaching students how to eventually become independent learners is also very important. I think my strengths as a tutor are my solid foundation of the…

I think my opinion about teaching is for different kids should have different method. For example, when you teach an introverted but smart kid you can’t just tell him what to do, you have to give him more courage and gain his trust, because the kid is wise enough and you just need to lead the right not to tell him how to do. Second. It is being…

The best way to help a student learn to assist them in breaking down the problems they face. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to have patience. Understanding that each student is different and that it's necessary to adapt to their pace in order to achieve results. I feel that I have always had a certain ease in teaching something to people when compared to most of them trying to convey knowledge. I believe it's…

I think the most important things I can do for a student revolve around mentorship. Being a tutor is not just about imparting information and tips to the student. It is recognising the student as a whole, looking after their mental wellbeing, and ensuring that what they're learning is being tailored to them, rather than a cookie-cut approach. A…

Help them understand and not let them feel helpless. A tutor needs to have a good understanding of the content to help cater to the students' needs. By suggesting or providing different resources (e.g. alternative text books, handouts, video clips or study cards), the student can widen their methods of learning and access to resources. A tutor needs to be a relatable individual, who gets along…

I would say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be giving them motivation and support. As a tutor we can help build the students confidence in their academic abilities. We can also effectively equip students with valuable study skills that's applicable in all their future studies. Lastly, learning can be challenging, so as…

Building a strong self-esteem is the most important thing as no student should feel incapable of achieving high scores or have anxiety towards school. First, I think a tutor should have good subject and curriculum knowledge so that they may be able to provide as much information as they can towards the kids. I think communication skills is another important thing a tutor must have (the way they explain the topics so that it is easy for the students to understand). Finally a tutor must be patient…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to be very clear and not convoluted when explaining topics, equations, etc. to students, as it can be very easy to get intimated as a student and end up confused. I believe it is also important not to assume any knowledge straight away from students but to intentionally ask what it is that they…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student extend beyond simply imparting knowledge. Building confidence is key to academic success. Secondly, a tutor should tailor their…

Inside BooragoonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Lillie worked through patterns and algebra, plus location and transformations using tailored questions to target areas needing improvement.

For Year 8 Matteo, the session focused on linear lines and solving simultaneous equations, including test-style problems for practice.

Year 10 Olivia reviewed past measurement tests—covering perimeter, area, surface area, and volume—and then revised probability concepts such as Venn diagrams and two-way tables to strengthen understanding before her upcoming assessment.

Recent Challenges

Several process habits need attention across year levels.

A Year 8 student repeatedly ran out of time in tests, with the tutor noting, "a lot of questions that weren't answered were due to running out of time."

For a Year 10 learner, messy or incomplete working—especially skipping steps in algebra—meant errors went unnoticed until review.

In one senior session, failure to bring required textbooks and materials led to lost learning opportunities; as observed: "needs to bring textbook to tutoring sessions."

Meanwhile, a primary student's homework was not completed before the lesson, resulting in half the session being spent catching up instead of moving forward.

Recent Achievements

One Booragoon tutor recently saw a Year 11 student take real initiative by starting a daily journal to track tricky economics topics, something he hadn't done before, which helped him recall key concepts for his final exam.

A high schooler who used to hesitate when stuck on maths questions now openly talks through her problem-solving steps and cross-checks answers aloud, rather than staying silent or guessing.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who often rushed her homework has begun completing all assigned work independently and on time—last week she handed in every task without reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Civic Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Booragoon Primary School.
