As a tutor, the most important thing is to "preach". Tutors who don't know how to "preach" often only focus on academic matters, which can easily lead to intensified conflicts between teachers and students. The premise of "preaching" is to establish a harmonious teacher-student relationship. I think there are three key points, that is, to be more…

1. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them become more confident with themselves about their ability to achieve the grade they want in the subject they want. The most important things a tutor can do could be split into two parts. Academically, tutors are there to help the student to learn all the knowledge required for them to achieve better grades. Spiritually, tutors are there as mentors, which they need to encourage the student to achieve their full potential, because usually due to exam pressure,…

Inside BowdenTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student William built confidence with long addition and practiced multiplication strategies, using written methods for clarity.

For Year 10, Grace tackled trigonometry—solving triangles with ratios and applying Pythagoras' theorem to worded geometric problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ben focused on financial maths by working through house loan calculations and variable interest scenarios, learning to solve for unknowns using a calculator.

Recent Challenges

Over several year levels, process-related habits are holding back progress.

For example, a Year 8 student relied heavily on their calculator in mental arithmetic tasks—"still needs to work on this," one tutor noted—which led to hesitation when the calculator was unavailable.

In Year 11, anxiety during calculus drills caused skipped checks and repeated mistakes under time pressure.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner often left homework incomplete and needed reminders to review past errors instead of moving on quickly.

Across both junior and senior years, confusion with terminology like "mode" versus "mean" resulted in wasted effort on the wrong methods mid-assessment.

Recent Achievements

A Bowden tutor recently saw a Year 10 student who had struggled to use mental maths confidently begin applying new shortcuts in their working, even tackling practice questions without prompting—something they'd previously avoided.

In a senior session, a Year 12 student took real initiative by openly explaining the exact points where they got stuck in class and then worked through solutions step by step with much less hesitation than before.

Meanwhile, one of our younger students started attempting larger addition problems independently and no longer waits for reassurance before trying each question.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I am pleased to say that things are going very well with Tina so far. Tina is organised, confident and already has a good grasp of Olivia's issues and Olivia really likes having her come each week. I look forward to her continued progress.

We are very happy with Alana. Savannah feels very comfortable with her & enjoyed the session. I am sure we will get positive results.

Anna is thoroughly enjoying Stef tutoring. She likes her. Thank you for sending such a beautiful girl to us.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hindmarsh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Immaculate Heart of Mary School.
