The most important thing for a maths tutor is to inspire students to learn, and develop their own passion for learning. Learning should not be seen as a criteria for entries to tertiary institutes. Most of the time, people learn for the marks. While an A+ or that 50 raw is satisfying, it may not be the best for the student in the long run. I want…

To me, one of the most important responsibilities as a maths tutor is ensuring that the student develops a strong foundation of knowledge through proper communication of the learning material. I also believe that a tutor should encourage their students to see learning material as more than content they can forget after a test but rather as…

A tutor should be extremely caring when it comes to their students. Often, especially kids, are afraid to ask tutors questions at the risk of "sounding dumb". I believe it is the tutor's foremost responsibility to assure the students that learning is for everyone, and they are not alone when facing that doubt. Perseverance, organisation, patience,…

It is important to build an easy rapport with students in the beginning, making the student feel at ease, and comfortable, putting the student in a position in which he or she feels comfortable asking questions; it allows them to get answers to all their doubts in easy manner Key…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is help them understand their work, to the point where, with the tutor, the student would is better off, than without the tutor. I believe that the most important thing a maths tutor can do is work themself out of a job. All jokes aside, my number one goal in tutoring is to set up my students with amazing study habits and disciplined work ethic so that once they finish exams and go off to their next stage of life, they can carry all the skills they picked up and succeed in…

Pass on experience and knowledge, so that the students can understand the topic at a conceptual level. A student that understands the core concepts behind a topic will be best prepared to take their study to a higher level so that is the most important thing a maths tutor can teach. I think I'm friendly and approachable as a tutor. I believe this…

Brush over familiar concepts of study, and go into detail with concepts that are a little more difficult to understand. I am opinion I reckon the most important is for the student to know their true passion in knowledge. Many of us are forced to be good at something and spend thousands of hours of hard work. Everyone could achieve a reasonably high score if they had spent the effort in it, given they were not demotivated during the process. I believe it is most…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do would be to maintain a strict regimen on what is expected in a student. Students that are set in the easy and slow pace that their classroom teachers assert themselves will fall behind easily. It is vital that a tutor recognise and go the extra mile to attain new resources and schedules for their…

I think one of the most important things a maths tutor can do is help students believe in themselves. Sometimes they know more than they think—they just need someone to encourage them and show them they’re capable. And remind students that learning is a process. A tutor should focus on progress, not perfection, and celebrate the small wins…

Inside Brandon ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Daniel practised solving linear equations and finding the gradient and y-intercept of lines, including working through examples using coordinate points.

In Year 10, Jessica focused on quadratic equations—completing the square and transforming quadratics into different forms—as well as transformations of functions from the Methods course.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Liam tackled rates and algebraic fractions from the Specialist Mathematics syllabus, along with further practice on function transformations to support his advanced studies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student tackling quadratics hesitated to show written steps, even when not strictly required; as one tutor observed, "writing out logic helps avoid repeated sign errors," but the urge for neatness led to gaps in working.

In a Year 9 session on conditional probability, a reliance on the CAS calculator without careful input checking caused confusion—incorrect answers went unnoticed until rework was needed.

Meanwhile, a primary student repeatedly left homework incomplete in fractions and times tables, which made later sessions less confident and slowed skill growth. The missing practice showed up during live questions: pauses, doubt, erasing instead of reasoning.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Brandon Park noticed Maddison, a Year 10 student, now sketches clear diagrams to break down challenging linear relation problems—something she previously hesitated to do.

Jack, in Year 11, recently tackled transformations of graphs with far less prompting than before and worked through complex equations independently.

In primary sessions, Olivia has started placing her numbers correctly when multiplying large values; just last week, she confidently completed long multiplication without mixing up digit placement—a big shift from her earlier confusion.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glen Waverley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glen Waverley South Primary School.
