I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is be understanding , not only of the students pace , but the students welfare , mindfulness , capabilities and perhaps even their limits My strength as a tutor is my relatable nature with those I teach , as just coming out of highschool I am well versed in the most challenging topics, how to go…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is understand their true needs. Sometimes students need more than just a teacher who is repeating themselves to help them understand things. Tutors should be trying different techniques and approaches that better suit that student, and understand the weaknesses of that student to better help…

It's important is to not show the student everything and complete their work for them. Tutoring is about enabling the student to complete work and content by explaining concepts to them so they understand what the question is asking them and explain to the child what the question is asking and then assisting them where they need to succeed. I…

I think it is extremely important for a tutor to be adaptable. Different students have differing learning styles and needs, and therefore, to help different students, you need to be able to tailor your tutoring to individualised approaches. Furthermore, rather than just giving the children the answers, as a tutor it is important to be able to help…

I consider the most important role of a tutor is to grow students confidence in subjects via encouragement. In order to strengthen students knowledge and abilities, a tutor should ensure that the student believes they can improve their understanding of a subject and trusts that their extra effort does pay off. Hence, by creating an environment…

Believing in students is one of the crucial aspects for being a tutor. The student needs someone to believe in them to succeed in their subjects, even if they themselves do not do so. Patience and firmness go hand in hand, so that the tutor is able to ensure the students cultivates discipline when learning, but also that they enjoy the process. As…

1. When teaching it is important to post assess the students understanding after the lesson was completed. 2. Mistakes should be promptly identified and corrected. 3. It is important to genuinely praise the students efforts , answers in the session as it helps to build confidence. 4. Should be able to adopt accordingly to each student. 5.…

Being an inspirational character. A tutor has to encourage his/her students always. During a semester/course, there will be certain times when students will lose interests for a poor mark (may be), or a personal problem. A tutor can't force a student to complete a session because it has to! A friendly approach can be helpful sometimes as well.…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping the student believe in themselves and letting them know they can do well. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being flexible. A tutor must be able to accommodate the strengths and weaknesses of their students, and this means having a wide range of strategies and methods to help students. Tutors must also be able to think on their feet, and be prepared for any queries and questions their students may…

Inside Briar HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sadé worked on long multiplication with 2-3 digit numbers and tackled multi-step word problems involving addition and subtraction.

Year 6 student Indie focused on mastering the 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 times tables before applying this knowledge to solve long multiplication questions with larger numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Jamie spent the lesson revising decimal operations—adding and subtracting decimals using vertical algorithms—and began practising these skills through worded problem scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 5 student repeatedly forgot to carry numbers during long multiplication, as noted: "she would occasionally forget to add the carried numbers or misalign the columns in her working out."

In Year 7 maths, one learner needed frequent reminders about area formulas and sometimes mixed them up, leading to extra time spent correcting answers instead of building fluency.

For a Year 8 student, challenges with interpreting worded problems meant they often needed guidance before attempting solutions.

When presented with mixed-order times tables in Year 6, another struggled to recall facts quickly, slowing progress on division tasks.

Recent Achievements

A Briar Hill tutoring session saw a high school student, Sadé, who used to hesitate with long division now tackle harder questions confidently and even worked efficiently with divisors like 12 and 20.

Another win came from Indie in Year 6: she had previously struggled to apply short division independently but recently solved multi-digit problems by herself, showing much more self-assurance.

In Year 4 English, John—who once guessed at unfamiliar words—has started sounding them out methodically when reading aloud, making it through passages that were stumbling blocks before.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

So far, we are very happy with Hamza and the work he is doing with Asha. He is always prompt, organised and has a very gentle and patient manner of teaching which Asha appreciates.

We have been very pleased with the approach Darrell has used with our daughter. He has been very personable and works at developing a relationship with our daughter while teaching her. She has responded well and feels more confident with her maths skills. She received positive feedback from her teacher after only two sessions with Darrell and she is confidently waiting for the results of her test. Darrell has always been polite, on time and communicates well with us. We appreciate his support.

Joseph is a legend.  The feedback from Max has been great, and what he is doing is excellent.   I am really impressed with his work and the effect it seems to be having. Thanks!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Diamond Valley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Briar Hill Primary School.
