Give the student hope that they are able to do achieve something. I am that person where if u promise someone something that you know won't be achieved will damage that students confidence more than saying 'I can't promise anything, but I will try my absolute hardest to get you to your destination'. By giving students hope, and belief that they…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student it be approachable. If the student feels comfortable asking questions and being honest about what they don't understand, it makes teaching them much easier. That's why, as a tutor, I would do my very best to be friendly and comfortable with the student, and make sure they can enjoy learning…

Listen and understand, as well as not rushing them but still applying pressure to their studies, most students lack confidence within themselves, so inspiring confidence within a student is a huge base step to learning. Engaging, listening, understanding as well as being able to problem solve and find unique ways to explain content in order for…

Building the student's confidence and knowledge are the two key aspects of being a tutor that I have found during my experience. Nothing is more important than a student feeling they can combat the work which is put in front of them. I can be flexible and work with the strengths and weaknesses of my students. I am extremely organised which allows…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is just be patient with them. As students are brought up in a competitive environment in school, most times they feel inferior to their peers as not everyone learns at the same pace. Some learn faster and some learn slower and most often students feel lost and pressured. As a tutor, being there for…

I consider one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is build their confidence. Once this is established and the student has faith in their own abilities, the tutor is able to guide and facilitate their learning as a pose to simply instruct. The role of the tutor is to recognise what the student is capable of doing on their own…

I feel the problem with most tutors is they know their content but that they don't know how the other child would grasp it as in my experience each child is different and as tutors we must understand their way of understanding and try explaining in a way that it is easy for them to understand. So this is one of the most important things a tutor…

The most important thing that a tutor can present is the additional support and knowledge beyond what students learn in school. The tutor's presence serves to be a reference point for the students and their goal is to nurture and nourish the student academically. A tutor should focus on empowering the student, rather than simply teaching the content to them, so that when the tutor is not present, the student is still able to motivate themselves and have confidence in their ability without having someone to rely on. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be empathetic to the experience of a student, especially as a young person. Therefore, being empathetic allows a tutor to…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to use personalised strategies that suit the student's learning style so that they can benefit from their one-on-one lessons in a way that they don't have the opportunity to in the classroom. A tutor needs to be able to successfully teach the student the material but also needs to provide the motivation and confidence a student needs to study and conquer any tests/exams. Students study around the clock, thus a tutor needs to be available when assistance is most required to provide the necessary support. Also recognise that many things…

My thesis paper was about how positive reinforcement positively affects the students academics and based on the results the most important thing a teacher can do for a student is to appreciate them and the effort that they put in their work. Tutors need to be understanding, patient, but also firm in their encouragement for their students to do their best. Inside BroadmeadowsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Salma worked on maths skills including estimation, rounding numbers, and understanding ratios using online quizzes, and also began drafting a personal journey essay for English.

Year 10 student Wellson focused on solving simultaneous equations with matrices in maths and practiced analytical writing by drafting essays about climate change and the film Sunset Boulevard, receiving feedback to improve his structure.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Abby prepared for her English comparative essay by researching The Dressmaker and The Crucible, compiling notes from both texts, and planning out practice essays.

Recent Challenges

After a Year 11 English SAC, one student struggled to organise essay arguments, despite clear teacher feedback. This made it harder to show logical progression in responses under exam pressure.

In maths (Year 12), missing a graphics calculator slowed practice and limited the chance to attempt complex exercises at home.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student preparing for an oral presentation felt their confidence dip after forgetting key points during rehearsal; the feedback given was not fully used in follow-up practice.

As revision demands grew before exams, planning and time management sometimes slipped—especially when balancing schoolwork with outside commitments.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Broadmeadows noticed Wellson, a high school student, has moved from struggling to organise his essay ideas to independently drafting well-structured essays and even refining his research approach—a big shift from earlier sessions where planning was a hurdle.

Abby, also in high school, used to feel overwhelmed by assessments but now creates detailed revision schedules and compiles notes ahead of time without prompting.

Meanwhile, Mahmoud (Year 5) has started asking more questions about science topics during sessions instead of staying quiet when unsure; last week he eagerly explained spacetime using objects around the room.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hume Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Roxburgh College-The Gateway School.
