The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to think the way a student thinks. The understanding level of a tutor and a student are at different levels, so it is essential for a tutor to go to the students' level and try to explain to them as to what is being taught. It is also essential for the tutor to make the class as interesting…

As a student myself, the important things a tutor can do for a student can provide a clear and simple explanation and help them how to break down a given problem and apply the learned concept in real-life scenarios. And, another important point to note is that every student is unique, so as a tutor, I should be able to adapt to the teaching style…

For me, helping the student grasp the intuition of the concept at hand is perhaps the most important aspect of tutoring. This is particularly relevant for a subject like mathematics where understanding the theory is just as important as applying it to many different situations. Lack of effective instruction in this regard is unfortunately why…

To me, a tutor can make learning real, relevant and interesting.Tutor can make learning relevant to students's interest which in itself is half the battle won as research has proved that one learns things quickly if those aligns to one's interest. For e.g., a student who like solving maths puzzles will quickly learn new formulas and other things…

A teacher must be able to impart knowledge to his/her students. Its not only good that a tutor should have a good command of his core area of specialty, he/she must also be able to pass the knowledge across in a way the students will comprehend. Beyond just improving grades, the most important thing a tutor can do is build confidence. Many students fail maths not because they aren't smart, but because they have 'maths anxiety' and believe they can't do it. A great tutor changes that mindset by creating a safe space to make mistakes. Secondly, a tutor must teach independent study…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student it be approachable. If the student feels comfortable asking questions and being honest about what they don't understand, it makes teaching them much easier. A good tutor, besides academic understanding, communication, patience and flexibility are the key aspects. Every student has their own unique learning curve and techniques, it is the tutor's job to discuss with the student and figure out the best way to convey the ideas and give appropriate study load. I think a tutor can give a student a lot but the most important thing is boosting the morale of the student. A teacher has the power to build up or tear down a students's self-esteem and make a student's day or ruin it in an instant. So, a teacher must fill the role of someone who has the best interests of every child at heart. The main focus…

Inside BroadmeadowsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Salma worked on maths skills including estimation, rounding numbers, and understanding ratios using online quizzes, and also began drafting a personal journey essay for English.

Year 10 student Wellson focused on solving simultaneous equations with matrices in maths and practiced analytical writing by drafting essays about climate change and the film Sunset Boulevard, receiving feedback to improve his structure.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Abby prepared for her English comparative essay by researching The Dressmaker and The Crucible, compiling notes from both texts, and planning out practice essays.

Recent Challenges

After a Year 11 English SAC, one student struggled to organise essay arguments, despite clear teacher feedback. This made it harder to show logical progression in responses under exam pressure.

In maths (Year 12), missing a graphics calculator slowed practice and limited the chance to attempt complex exercises at home.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student preparing for an oral presentation felt their confidence dip after forgetting key points during rehearsal; the feedback given was not fully used in follow-up practice.

As revision demands grew before exams, planning and time management sometimes slipped—especially when balancing schoolwork with outside commitments.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Broadmeadows noticed Wellson, a high school student, has moved from struggling to organise his essay ideas to independently drafting well-structured essays and even refining his research approach—a big shift from earlier sessions where planning was a hurdle.

Abby, also in high school, used to feel overwhelmed by assessments but now creates detailed revision schedules and compiles notes ahead of time without prompting.

Meanwhile, Mahmoud (Year 5) has started asking more questions about science topics during sessions instead of staying quiet when unsure; last week he eagerly explained spacetime using objects around the room.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hume Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Roxburgh College-The Gateway School.
