I think a good tutor needs to first and foremost be able to understand the level of their student in order to help them improve. I also think that being able to re-explain mathematical theories and concepts in alternative ways is essential in helping students to fully comprehend the subject. I feel patience is key, but a good tutor also needs to…

Encourage them to pursue their dreams. Teach them to be lifelong learners. I believe you have completely understood the concept when you can simplify it entirely. So, the student should totally grasp the concepts at hand. A tutor can help the student realize their passions, and help them achieve it. Making the students interested in the subject by…

According to me the most important thing for the tutor is to understand that not all students understand concepts the same way and sense when students do not understand something and willingly try another approach of presenting the material to help the student. With this approach a tutor can make a difference in the student’s learning. I believe…

Over the years, I have developed the opinion that the teaching of transferable skills - contrary to only what is needed at the moment - is most valuable for the student’s future development. It is important to see that just completing the mandatory homework will not suffice, the real challenge is to change the mindset. As a good tutor, one has…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make that student interested in what they are learning. Although students may not enjoy every aspect of what they're learning, if they can find even one thing that they enjoy, this could be enough. I am patient, determined, and kind to those that I tutor. So, I think that…

To help them learn and understand the topic or subject by heart. Also, be able to understand the students as well, as tutoring is like being fluent in a language. This means adapting lessons to their learning style, helping them gain confidence, and encouraging them to think critically. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make whatever they feel to be insurmountable, into something that is really quite simple. it is to make them not lose interest in studies but instead invigorate their passion in it. Provide a safe space for the student to make mistakes without judgement. They don’t always have this at school with their peers looking on. Provide high level materials that don’t just duplicate those from school or in generic books. I really think about the resources we use to make sure they are the right level, challenging and have stretch…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage them to be self-sufficient - I'm a firm believer that anybody can study by themselves, and that tutors are there to help the student bounce ideas off and help break down hard to digest pieces of education. A great tutor does more than just teach—they empower, guide, and inspire students to reach their full potential. A tutor’s goal isn’t just to help with immediate challenges but to equip students with the skills to solve future problems on their own. Many students, especially women and minorities in STEM, face imposter syndrome. A great tutor…

Inside BronteTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Chance worked on calculating the volume of cubes and developed multiplication skills through practice exercises.

In Year 9, Aaliyah focused on her science assignment by exploring DNA replication using visual aids for stop motion animation.

For a senior high school example, Year 11 student completed lessons on quadratic equations and introductory differentiation, applying both algebraic methods and step-by-step problem solving.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student, as one tutor noted, "started the assignment a few days before it was due," leading to rushed research and limited opportunity for feedback.

In Year 10 mathematics, homework was sometimes incomplete or missing during sessions—one instance saw class time spent searching for misplaced work instead of reviewing exam content.

A senior student in trigonometry repeatedly provided only final answers without showing working; this habit masked where conceptual errors occurred, especially with unit conversions.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner often relied on finger counting for multiplication facts during quick drills, slowing progress on more advanced tasks.

Recent Achievements

Jessy, a high school student in Bronte, independently graph[ed] complicated trig functions using ASTC and accurately found x-intercepts—something she struggled with just weeks earlier.

Another high school win came from Tobey, who recently completed long division questions involving decimals on his own after needing regular prompts before. He also handled ratio problem-solving with much less hesitation.

In primary years, Lucy has started recalling topics from previous sessions without reminders and now sets out her equations clearly before solving problems—a big shift from her earlier habit of jumping in without planning.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We've had 2 sessions with Hyolie and I find her very knowledgeable and organised. My daughter is comfortable with her, so far so good.

Zac is progressing well and is enjoying his tutoring with Emily.  He has clicked with her and they seem to be working well together.

We really like Mark, his communication style really suits Remy, and he is able to work out what she needs very quickly. We would love to stay with him until the end of the year. They are a good match. Thank you

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Waverley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bronte Public School.
