Patience and an emphatic approach to teaching are essential for a tutor. Students may lack confidence, be overwhelmed with material, and be stressed. Therefore, it's important to be considerate and patient. This approach can also help understand students' misconceptions and errors by being patient, and listening to students can reveal what areas…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is listen. Listen to their problem, why they may not understand a concept, and then help to solve the problem together. I think that having fun, is also very important. One of my main goals aside from helping a student understand the content, is to help the student enjoy the…

To be there as a constant guide, a reliable anchor, and a mentor for the students. When it comes to tutoring students, it is important to note that they are all unique individuals in their own right. Every student will have their own set of challenges, weaknesses, strengths, and respond differently to certain approaches. Instead of applying a…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is be supportive and encouraging while teaching. If a student doesn’t feel comfortable in their environment they will no longer want to continue. A positive mindset and patience can help a student become more excited about learning and tutoring lessons. A friendly personality can also make…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is listen to them. This is the only way to know what they don't understand and where they need help. Positive feedback is also essential in tutoring. If the student feels like they aren't making any progress and that they will never understand the problem, then they may give up all…

Inside BruceTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Ethan worked through NAPLAN past paper questions 1–25 and reviewed key concepts on circumference basics.

Year 11 student Priya focused on mastering the laws of indices and revised surds, with some work on rationalising denominators using step-by-step examples.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Daniel practiced applying differentiation to exam-style questions and tackled problems involving tangents and normals to curves.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student left multiple homework sets unfinished in algebra and fractions ("Homework - 9A, 9B, 9C - All Questions"), making it harder to reinforce new skills.

In VCE Methods, one student tackled complex differentiation but didn't complete assigned past exam papers—notes read: "Needs to complete the 2009 Paper for Homework."

Another in Year 11 focused revision on familiar problems, shying away from application questions that would boost understanding.

As a tutor observed about a senior: "Need to get more organised then will be able to succeed"—misplaced notes and incomplete practice meant extra time spent catching up before tests.

Recent Achievements

A Bruce tutor noticed a big change in one Year 10 student who previously hesitated to use her calculator and often guessed, but now double-checks her answers confidently during sessions.

In Year 11 maths, a student who used to skip tough surds questions is now attempting them without prompting—last week, he even set his own goal of full marks for the next exam.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who would only answer with help is starting to tackle basic problems independently and asks follow-up questions when unsure. This time, he finished all ten problems on his own.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Everything seems to be going along quite well at the moment, Lawrence is a nice tutor and Arawyn seems to like him.

Thanks for the email Erica, we have been very happy with Enya, she is making lots of effort to have interesting ways to teacher Jasper  the maths concepts and he is very happy after each session.

Thanks Erica, Jemma & Hunter get along very well I'm pleased to report. I've observed that Jemma has that natural communication talent that all gr8 teachers have i.e. they engage you with their knowledge.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Belconnen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like University of Canberra Senior Secondary College Lake Ginninderra.
