For me, I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is motivate and build confidence in the student. Confidence is key to performing well in exams, and of course actually teaching the content is necessary, but I find without the confidence students only do marginally better. With confidence they can do improve astronomically.…

Being able to understand the individual needs of the student is extremely important. If I'm able to understand where the student needs the most help, I can ensure better results. One of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to be encouraging, well-informed, and be able to drive the student to understand the topics being…

It is important for tutors to try to put themselves into students' shoes, in terms of what exactly do they have difficulty with as well as finding out the precise point of confusion that students are facing, rather than blindly implementing different strategies and hoping that they will be able to understand a complex concept. I think one of my…

I view a tutor as simply a guide. They can mould and change a student's perspective and attitude about many different topics. The most important thing a tutor does is build up the blocks to give their students and strong foundation to stand on and build themselves up from. These activities can range from effective communication to, simple…

I believe that a tutor should inspire confidence. Many of the pupils I have tutored have had more ability in English than they had first realised. What they needed was more time with an experienced teacher to ask questions and gain understanding of texts which they could not successfully do in class. Pupils in my charge are given clear…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can bring to a student is the ability to be independent in his work (no matter the subject or the field). Nicola, Brunswick

Inside BrunswickTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Juliette focused on revising dot plots, frequency tables, and basic probability concepts using recent test material.

For Year 9, Edie practised expanding and factorising algebraic expressions, then moved on to finding equations from graphs and tables for deeper understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sophia concentrated on mastering angle rules within geometry and prepared for an upcoming test by practising related questions from class assignments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7–8 maths, one student often skipped writing out working, preferring to "do it in my head," which led to mistakes when substituting values or tackling worded problems—especially as equations grew more complex. As a tutor noted, "she tries to do substitution in her head rather than each step on paper, this leads to mistakes."

In VCE-level sessions, another student repeatedly forgot textbooks and needed frequent prompting just to begin tasks; confidence dropped further after a poor test result with blank answers left unattempted.

In English writing for Year 9, an over-focus on minor details derailed essay planning, leaving arguments unfinished and frustration high.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Brunswick noticed **Juliette is now quick to ask for help** as soon as something isn't clear, instead of staying quiet—last session she immediately voiced confusion and then tackled similar questions on her own after some guidance.

In Year 9 English, Samuel set the agenda for his sessions by **clearly communicating what he needed** from his autobiography writing tasks, a shift from previous uncertainty about lesson goals.

Another high school student recently showed initiative by **creating a cheat sheet for algebra** revision and independently spotted mistakes while double-checking her answers during practice.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I believe Paige is beginning to ask Jake more questions. I have advised her if she is still unsure of something she should ask for Jake to explain it again or in a different way. I feel she is starting to have more faith and she has advised me she is understanding some concepts a bit more clearly.

I see how much more confident Nicholas is with maths, the teachers at school have noticed a difference, and he is eager to do maths now as where before he wasn't. In regards to Wade, well he is just gorgeous. He has built up a great relationship with Nicholas, and he actually waits for Wade each week..  Wade makes it fun, for Nicholas to do maths. Nicholas told me last week, s" when i get a question wrong, Wade makes me remember how to do it with a trick."  I think Wade explains it to him in a way that he understands it. I think Wade is fantastic at what he does and you can tell he loves his maths. cheers.

Thanks for this. The first tutorial seemed to go very well.  Jet was certainly very positive about Josh!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brunswick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sydney Road Community School.
