The most important things that a tutor can do for a student are by being able to customize a tutorial plan specifically for individual students, they are helping the students understand better, perform better academically, help them manage time and teach them better study methods. My greatest strengths are patience, observation and simplifying…

The most important thing is to engage with the student. It is more beneficial for the student and tutor to work together and be open to new ideas or methods to tackle questions. Instead of the tutor forcing the student to use one method, engaging with the student will lead to the most effective way to solve the question and will lead to successful…

As a tutor, I feel the ultimate goal is to benefit the student to become an independent and confident learner. Mostly, students see their tutors as role models, so it’s very important to keep ourselves updated and supportive throughout and be ready to reach out to them academically and as a friend whenever in need. To conclude, having confidence…

We should guide and support the students through their learning journey and ideally nurture their curiosity towards the different subjects so as to possibly develop a passion for a particular subject. I believe I am quite patient with my students as I have had experience with teaching those that have autism and ADHD before and did not have much…

I think it’s not only about teaching them the assigned subjects but also guiding them and boosting their confidence when it comes to exams, presentation or any other academical activities. It shouldn’t be one way classes it should always be interactive, interesting and innovative. I would also focus on maintaining the tutor and the student…

A tutor needs to understand that every student learns differently. Therefore it is important to understand, especially if a tutor has multiple students, that one lesson won't have the same effect on every student. Tutors must adapt to teach students specific details they do not know and in specific ways. I'm proficient at adapting my teaching…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to keep them motivated. Often at a young age if we fail to grasp a concept it can damage our self-confidence. Therefore it is a tutor's responsibility to bring out the 'never give up'attitude in students and motivate them to continue trying until they can overcome the hurdle. Tutors should…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is simply be open to answer any questions a student might have. The most important things a tutor can do for a student for mi consideration would be listening to my students and get to know them in order to adjust and assess my strategy and way of teaching as a tutor, and in that way the tutor can be the most creative as it can, giving hints and techniques to students on how to think by themselves, question…

There are a lot of children who are scared of a subject or who always say „I‘m just not good at it“ and I want them to be able to say „Yeah, I understand it“ and feel better and more confident in the subject I am very patient and creative so I know many ways to explain one thing so that the individual child can…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build independence. By encouraging self-reliance and critical thinking, I aim to give students the tools they need to succeed long after our…

In my personal opinion besides teaching a student what is in the unit/study guide, a tutor should be taking responsibility in creating a fun learning environment and encouraging and motivating the students to be confident. This would help to enhance the students performance. The strength I have as an individual is I am able to create a comfortable…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence in their ability to solve problems and understand concepts. A tutor should create an environment where students feel encouraged to engage with challenges, rather than…

I consider building confidence in a student highly important when tutoring. In my experience as a teacher, students often value one on one teaching where available. Being able to focus on one student and their needs within their own education, builds a more confident student whether in their work, or when seeking assistance from teachers. Building…

Inside Brunswick WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jade practised **addition techniques like rainbow facts and doubles**, and worked through school worksheets on identifying quarters.

For Year 9, Mia focused on **expanding and factorising algebraic expressions** as well as tackling worded algebra problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Liam reviewed **trigonometric functions—particularly angles of elevation and depression—using worded problem scenarios** to prepare for his upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students arrived without essential materials such as notebooks or homework, making it difficult to revise specific topics or track progress—one Year 10 student, for instance, "forgot her maths book, so we had to work off internet worksheets and our memories of what the test was going to cover."

In senior years, over-reliance on calculators appeared: a VCE student scored much lower on non-calculator sections ("marks were 22% (no calculator) and 45% (calculator/open book)"), highlighting a need for stronger mental arithmetic skills.

Across primary and middle years, perfectionism or fear of error often led to freezing up instead of attempting answers; as one tutor observed, "she will freeze up at a question until I prompt her to either tell me if she 'has no idea' or 'give me any answer, even if you think it's wrong.'" This hesitancy slowed practice and sometimes left gaps unaddressed in real time.

Recent Achievements

One Brunswick West tutor noticed that a Year 10 student who previously left tricky worded maths questions unfinished was able to complete one independently after just a few prompts, and then proactively asked for feedback on his creative writing, showing real openness to improvement.

A high schooler preparing for exams started bringing her own revision materials and, after working through trigonometry problems together, could solve similar ones entirely alone—something she hadn't managed before.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who relied heavily on finger counting now uses new addition strategies automatically and even graphed his improved worksheet times to show his mum.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbell-Turnbull Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
