A tutor can inspire and instill self belief/self esteem back into a student. A tutor can motivate students to study hard and receive good marks. When students receive good marks the student gains self esteem and confidence and ultimately happiness (which akes tutoring very rewarding). A tutor can be a good role model and show students not only the…

A tutor should always motivate a student to have a specific goal and want to work towards it. Tutors must inspire their students to strive to achieve and to dream of a future where they are successful. Being organised is crucial. Giving a student time to reflect on what they have learned, by spending time during a lesson explaining their…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is just be patient with them. As students are brought up in a competitive environment in school, most times they feel inferior to their peers as not everyone learns at the same pace. Some learn faster and some learn slower and most often students feel lost and pressured. As a tutor, being there for…

I think supporting the student and helping them build their confidence to be independent learners is important as well as putting a positive light on their problem areas. I think my strengths are being patient and understanding with my students. I'm also very thorough with my teaching and make sure every step is understood…

Building the student's confidence and knowledge are the two key aspects of being a tutor that I have found during my experience. Nothing is more important than a student feeling they can combat the work which is put in front of them. I can be flexible and work with the strengths and weaknesses of my students. I am extremely organised which allows…

Listen to what the student has to say, and base their teaching strategy around their individual needs. If the tutor doesn’t listen to a student or understand their struggles with certain areas, how could the tutor expect good results from their student? I believe I am very clear and concise with what I teach, and that because of my openly…

I would consider an ongoing \'positive reinforcement and encouragement\' to student is crucial for their success. Students love to be motivated in learning and they love to feel loved and supported in their learning journey. We as tutors are not just there to teach them what to do, but as their motivators to guide and encourage, so that they can…

The most important thing that a tutor can present is the additional support and knowledge beyond what students learn in school. The tutor's presence serves to be a reference point for the students and their goal is to nurture and nourish the student academically. Students should be able to clear any confusions and express their queries without…

Forging a want to learn. Learning to read and write shouldn't be a chore; it's what makes people human. A tutor can say they've done a good job if the student chooses to work on their skills and improving themselves even out of lessons. Empathy and openness. Most importantly, the tutor should be able to help the student achieve their desired academic results whilst under the tutor's tutelage, as this is the whole purpose of being a tutor. However, it is almost equally important to instill confidence in a student, that they will feel comfortable enough to step out of their comfort zones. More often…

To inspire a student to be curious and develop a love of learning, as people are not often motivated to improve in areas in which they lack passion. Inside BundooraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Jessie worked on long division with both single- and two-digit divisors, then practiced adding and subtracting simple fractions where denominators were factors of each other.

Year 8 student Sarah focused on algebraic equations involving all four operations, and began working with similar terms as well as finding lowest common multiples and highest common factors.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Emily completed trigonometry, applying the Pythagoras theorem to solve for unknown side lengths in right-angled triangles and using diagrams to support understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, one student's tendency to skip writing working for algebra led to repeated confusion and missed marks—"she often jumps straight to the answer, which hides small mistakes."

For a Year 11 economics student, answers lacked full explanations in economic terms; incomplete elaboration made it hard to show depth of understanding.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 struggled with using the correct formula during geometry questions, hesitating over which process to apply.

In each case, these habits left students spending extra time retracing steps or feeling unsure about their responses during assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Bundoora tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking for help; last week, he raised his hand mid-problem and explained exactly where he was stuck, leading him to finish all the algebra questions on his own.

In another session, a Year 11 student who'd previously mixed up biology concepts began completing short-answer questions independently after using her own summary notes for the first time.

Meanwhile, Jessie in Year 5 started writing out her multiplication workings step-by-step instead of guessing—she finished her homework with only one careless mistake.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Rosanna Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ivanhoe Grammar School - University Campus.
