The simple things like greeting and smile are as important to light up their day. A tutor should be able to boost the confidence level of the students and make it easier for students to understand. My teachers have been my second parents. Few of my school teachers are still in touch with me and we are like a family now. Throughout my education, I realised the importance of a good tutor. I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is to help students help themselves, or to assist or guide them so that they become independent learners. For this, tutors should have a positive outlook by believing that things can be changed through action. They should also have the desire to help others by showing comprehension, empathy,…

Inside BurswoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Patrick worked on addition and tallies using dice games to build number fluency, then began practicing basic column addition for improved calculation skills.

In Year 9, Charlotte focused on solving simultaneous equations by both substitution and elimination methods, as well as drawing linear graphs to visualise solutions.

For Year 10, Ethan revised trigonometry with a focus on finding unknown side lengths and angles in right-angled triangles, and practiced applying the Pythagoras theorem through targeted problem sets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student in Chemistry struggled to keep her assessment notes both complete and accurate; as a tutor observed, "her cycles summary was slightly incorrect and incomplete," which meant extra revision time before tests.

In Year 9 Maths, another student leaned heavily on calculators for simultaneous equations, leading to less confidence with handwritten solutions during practice.

For a younger learner in Year 3, loss of focus during tallying tasks led to miscounts—he could verbally count but when writing, "something gets missed." The frustration grew visible after each error, often resulting in disengagement mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Burswood tutor recently saw a Year 10 student move from needing step-by-step support with trigonometry to solving triangle problems independently, even selecting the correct rule (sin, cos, or tan) without prompting.

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student who previously struggled with structuring investigations can now set out a clear plan for identifying unknowns and works through sample problems mostly unaided.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who used to guess when tallying numbers now checks his own work and almost always tallies correctly; last session he confidently totalled several dice on his own.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Domenic has only had one session with Alvin, but he thinks he is 'awesome'. He likes the tips and tricks Alvin explains for solving maths problems. He's not keen on tutorials over holidays so will continue with more weekly lessons starting next week.

I am very happy with Aston. Joshua loved him and Aston is a great role Josh. Aston will be coming over for the second tutoring lesson tomorrow and I am pretty sure everything will work out perfectly.

We had one lesson with Taruka, she is lovely and Isabella enjoyed it. With school holiday and long weekend we haven't managed another but will definitely be starting up next week again.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Victoria Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Augustine's Primary School.
