A tutor's primary role is to guide students toward independent learning by helping them develop a deep understanding of the material. This involves not just explaining concepts clearly but also fostering critical thinking skills, encouraging self-confidence, and providing strategies for problem-solving and time management. By creating a supportive…

1. A tutor must first believe that every child can succeed. Their confidence in the child alone will be able to shift their attitude towards learning. 2. A tutor must thoroughly understand each student and see them as a whole person, not just a *Mathematics student. 3. This is so that with regular assessments, the tutor can craft a learning…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them build confidence in their ability to learn and succeed, and to create motivation for them to help them learn to their full capacity. I believe my strengths are as a tutor are my patience, my ability to explain things in different ways until my student understands, and my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen. Is there a way the student feels they learn better? Perhaps through pictures instead of words? Is the student not focussed and extremely tired? Would it be more productive to learn outside in the backyard or reschedule for another day? Students are young, but they are young adults.…

A student can receive individual attention from a tutor. There is no other student like in a classroom and hence the student can communicate easily with the tutor and clear their doubts in a more personalised manner. This is one of the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. I feel tutors can cater to the students personal needs and…

Remove the fear of not getting the one subject or one topic. As a teacher we must not just consider that two of our children is getting it ; but we should that why the others are not getting it . The most important things are to build confidence, teach the student how to learn, and create a space where mistakes are treated as part of growth. A good tutor understands the students, tailors concepts, helps a student see their progress, and helps them stay motivated. Just as importantly, a tutor should help the student become more…

A tutor must be able to understand the student first, and according to the student, he should be able to change and adapt to the current situation and respond according to the needs of the students, rather than having a constant set of rules or agenda to the way of teaching. I believe that the best thing that a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the self-confidence and self-belief to persevere through any difficulties they may face in their academics. This can be done through the gradual withdrawal of support as the student grows in their skills and confidence. Once the student has established their…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can be to a student is patient and kind. This is because there could be a particular concept the student is struggling with, so the tutor needs to be able to help them learn and improve on that topic. Being patient and kind in explaining it to the student is, therefore, an important part of doing so.…

Tutor should guide the student to think independently and creatively. This enables the student to form their own ideas and understand a concept in from different point of views instead of just following steps and rules. Most importantly, putting time and efforts after students till their basics are clear is the key for a tutor to use. Inside BurwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Flynn focused on understanding matrix multiplication and transformation matrices, working through worded questions to interpret their real-world applications.

In Year 10, Sucheta completed targeted revision for her upcoming probability test, including practice with Venn diagrams and the addition rule.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Sam tackled graphing parabolas—finding range and domain—and solved worded problems involving both parabolas and hyperbolas, using visual methods to reinforce concepts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for SACs in advanced maths was advised to "write down lots of notes to take into his sacs," yet often relied on memory rather than organizing a clear reference book—this left him searching for definitions and methods mid-task.

In a Year 8 session, heavy dependence on calculators was noted; as one tutor put it, "very reliant on calculator need to ease off and start using paper working more to help with test work."

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner struggled with homework conversions between fractions and decimals, leading to incomplete practice before class.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Burwood recently noticed Flynn, a high school student, tackle financial and linear modules that had previously left him unsure—he now works through practice exams with only minor errors needing correction.

In another session, Tayla (Year 7) shifted from hesitating to speak up to regularly volunteering answers and openly asking for help when stuck—a big step compared to her initial quietness.

Meanwhile, Sucheta (senior years) mastered long division of polynomials after initially struggling; by the end of the lesson she was confidently solving them without support.
