The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them understand their work, to the point where, with the tutor, the student would is better off, than without the tutor. I strive to make the student as confident as possible in the subject even if it is not their favourite. My strengths as a tutor would include being able to engage…

Firstly, improve a student's knowledge and understanding of the tutored subject, ensuring they are familiar with the required theory and are able to apply their knowledge to application format questions. That is the most important thing a tutor can provide, as well as the core purpose of the job. Secondly, a tutor can provide resources to help a…

make sure the tutors are patient and goes on a pace that is comfortable for the student. the most important thing to consider as a tutor is that each student is different and has their own way of learning, and its our job to understand and match their skillset, not the other way around. I am patient and my main focus is on building fundamentals,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them see past exams and assessments and really understand what the concepts are and why they are studying them in the first place. The tutor must be able to understand how the student learns and should be able to change their teaching style according to their student. In addition, a tutor must have a strong knowledge of the concepts and be willing to constantly improve themselves as the curriculum and the technology used in school changes. Being patient is also a crucial…

The most important thing a tutor can do would be to maintain a strict regimen on what is expected in a student. Students that are set in the easy and slow pace that their classroom teachers assert themselves will fall behind easily. It is vital that a tutor recognise and go the extra mile to attain new resources and schedules for their student to…

As mentioned, creating an alternate method for rote learning is to let the concept sink in through simple derivations and i have used it in my past so i'd love to pass it on to my students. For being a mathematics tutor, i believe the most important element is to not just bombard students with formulas but to explain it to them where they came…

Being there for a student is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Whilst tutors are there to help guide a student's learning progress, they should also present themselves as a supportive friend. The relationship between a student and tutor is important and aspects like giving general advice, and helping students during…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to promote confidence in their learning abilities. I have found that most students have no problems in actually learning the material itself, but rather have low self-esteem in themselves which negatively impacts their learning. Once you show them that they can do the work, it…

Students who need a tutor have different problems. They may be not so confident with their self-study or their academic performance. I respect my students…

I consider openness and willingness to hear out students' problems at the earliest possible moment to ensure that a student feels confident with something they may initially be unfamiliar with and are about to dive deeper in to be one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. It's also a tutor's duty to encourage application of said knowledge so that they can use their own academic achievement to improve their lives, and help the world a better place. Inside Burwood EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alex worked on two-digit by two-digit multiplication and progressed to division with remainders, often tackling worded problems for extra practice.

In Year 11, Keshara revised domain and range questions from the Methods syllabus and completed exam-style problems on transformations, including hyperbolas and parabolas.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Arjun focused on chemical analysis techniques such as IR and NMR spectrometry, alongside interpreting mass spectrometry data through targeted textbook exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths Methods, a student "forgot to bring his SAC for review," missing a chance to address feedback before the next assessment.

In Year 8 English, homework was incomplete and spelling lists left at home, which meant less progress on writing structure and vocabulary.

A Year 12 Chemistry student's practical report was difficult to follow due to disorganised notes and uncollated results, slowing down her analysis.

Meanwhile, in Year 3–4 Maths, several students continued relying on finger counting instead of memorising times tables—"he still used hands for addition," one tutor noted—which made mental calculations slow during problem-solving.

Recent Achievements

A Burwood East tutoring session saw a Year 3 student, previously hesitant with larger multiplication problems, now requesting to tackle three-digit by two-digit questions and confidently working through each step without relying on memorisation alone.

In Year 11, one student who used to wait for explanations has started proactively asking questions about complex transformation topics, using this initiative to deepen his understanding—especially noticeable during recent exam preparation.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 biology student put together her own practical report-writing guide after struggling with structure earlier in the term, now referring back to it independently while planning new assignments.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Vermont South Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Burwood East Primary School.
