Studying techniques, creating good habits and of course, feedback for improvements! These are the important aspects that a tutor should show their students. There is much more to learning than parroting back facts - information needs to absorbed, regurgitated, reused in a practical sense. I have much hands-on experience in using my chosen skills -…

As stated, one of the most important things a tutor can do for their student is to allow the student to enjoy what they're doing. This will then help in creating a comfortable environment where the tutor can teach and the student can efficiently take in what is being taught. As a tutor I find myself to be able to quickly adapt to the student that…

Every student is different, so I focus on adapting my explanations and pace to what works for them. I aim to build good learning habits by helping students organise their thinking, approach problems with structure, and develop strategies they…

Making sure that the student is comfortable and not to push them so soon into the problems and questions - ease them into the subject. If they are already "good" at the subject, then it comes down to being there to cultivate their skill with them. Ensuring the students understand first, then applying the fundamentals. I am a big advocate for…

Teach the lesson content easily where a student can grab it without any stress. Specially tutor should be able to teach the students to solve complex problems step by step and how to tackle it in a logical way. Also the tutor should be able to understand the students preferences and their learning methods at the first place to schedule or to map…

Help them to gain back their confidence. I mean from primary to middle school or even high school, the curriculum might be hard but not that hard that students could not pass it. I believe any students are capable of finishing high school with a decent grade. Most students I met were just getting distracted, or not spending their time enough on…

To me, a tutor can make learning real, relevant and interesting.Tutor can make learning relevant to students's interest which in itself is half the battle won as research has proved that one learns things quickly if those aligns to one's interest. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is allowing a student time to try and solve aspects of the problem themselves following proper guidance, instead of hand-holding them the entire way. This helps build critical thinking skills and allows the student to recognise the roots of the question. A tutor should also be understanding of any…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence in regards to the subject their teaching, not just their knowledge. When a student feels capable and supported, they are much more likely to take more of an interest in that subject outside of the classroom. Thus, they become more willing to take risks, ask…

Inside Calder ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Aryan worked on representing and interpreting data using different types of graphs, then explored measures of centre including mean, median, mode, and range.

In Year 8, Jake focused on algebraic expressions—learning how to collect like terms and expand brackets step-by-step.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sarah practised applying the Pythagoras theorem to solve problems involving right-angled triangles and was introduced to basic trigonometry concepts like sine, cosine, and tangent using SOH CAH TOA.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students faced challenges with test-taking processes, especially under timed conditions in mathematics.

For example, one Year 10 student "needed more practice being focused on task and timed," leading to rushed working during trigonometry revision.

A Year 8 learner struggled with interpreting worded problems—"difficulty understanding certain words" left some questions unanswered in assessments.

At the primary level, another student hesitated with multiplication tables when put under test pressure, slowing down progress through number facts.

In Year 12, over-reliance on a CAS calculator caused hesitation recalling formulas without support; confidence wavered as unfamiliar topics appeared.

Recent Achievements

One Calder Park tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 9 student who used to freeze when facing trigonometry questions—last session, she confidently identified opposite, adjacent, and hypotenuse sides and could calculate missing angles with little prompting.

In Year 11, another student showed new independence by spotting algebraic errors on his own and fixing them immediately, rather than waiting for guidance as he did before.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who had previously needed step-by-step help surprised her tutor by working through mixed fraction addition solo and checking her own answers for mistakes.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Anthony sat his final Maths exam today and I would like to thank you and especially Jonathan for his efforts and restoring confidence in my son's ability in sitting his exam.

Stella did an excellent job tutoring Tori for her HSC and at this stage we think she did reasonably well in the exam

I want to thank you so much, as Zoe has been so amazing. Ella has loved learning from her and I hope that if we come back next year we can request her.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sydenham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Overnewton Anglican Community College - Canowindra Campus.
