Inside CalistaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Sam focused on algebraic fractions and using indices rules to simplify expressions, also practising total surface area and volume calculations.

In Year 9, Mia worked through linear graphing by finding gradients and y-intercepts from equations and graphs, then used these skills to solve inequalities.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Oliver practised multiplying fractions and adding fractions with different denominators, reinforcing understanding of equivalent fractions using visual models.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, a student repeatedly tried to solve algebra and geometry questions mentally rather than writing steps, which made it harder to spot small errors—needs to write out working out instead of just doing it in her head.

A Year 11 student's notes were often cramped and hard to follow during index laws revision, causing confusion when checking answers.

In Chemistry (Year 10), missing or misusing formula sheets led to lost marks on balancing equations.

One primary student struggled with times tables recall, sometimes losing confidence after mistakes and hesitating to attempt harder problems the next lesson.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Calista recently noticed Keara move from needing frequent hints with trigonometry to solving problems independently and scoring 60% on her latest test—up from 40% last time.

Joshua, another older student, has started tackling harder linear graph questions without prompting and achieved over 80% on his last two maths tests.

Meanwhile, Ava in Year 9 no longer waits for answers but now explains her reasoning out loud before asking for help—a big shift from staying quiet when unsure. Last week, she confidently chose a new strategy on her own when faced with a challenging equation.
