Believing in your student has to be one of the most important things a tutor can do as you help the student know that nothing is impossible and they can do it all. I also think patience is also important as everyone learns differently and at various paces. I believe I am easy to communicate with. In terms of communicating with parents, my…

Tutoring as a whole is so important in todays society. I believe it is extremely necessary that young students are taught one on one to ensure their success. As someone who grew up with a tutor, I have some of my best memories with my tutor, and I owe a lot of my success to her. It is important that tutors are patient and understanding, while also…

The most important thing a tutor can do in my opinion is be patient with a student and try and understand the problem from their perspective. By doing this, you are able to see more clearly the issue that they might be having. I also believe that finding the best learning method for a student is a key part of the role as a tutor, and this will…

Tutoring a student can actually bring a significant change in the student. You should be able to understand the problem he is facing in regards of his learning by putting yourself in his shoes and then device a solution that can help him overcome that problem. I think I am a hardworking individual. I try to give my best at everything I…

In my opinion, the tutor's responsibility is to reaffirm the knowledge the student has already gained in school or help those who are behind. Considering this, I would say the most important thing is to understand and be patient with the student and help them to progress step by step. I am able to communicate with a wide range of age groups. My…

It is imperative for a tutor to know the students' weakness in order to be able to plan, practice, and implement the necessary actions/studies needed for the quickest and most effective improvements. To make sure that the student understands what you teach. Communicate in their own language. The use of different teaching techniques. Always encourage the child to do better. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to actually care about him/her. Being empathetic and understanding is one of the most important qualities a tutor can have. A good tutor will make sure that the student understands a particular concept rather than just learn how to solve a particular problem because that way the student can apply the learning in different situations and come up with ways to find the solution by…

A tutor can do a lot for a student. But I feel like the most important thing that can be done is to change the idea of a negative notion about a subject in the students mind. Attitude plays a key role in learning, and diminishing that fear, and giving the student confidence can really change their entire interest and perception about that certain…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to create an environment where the student feels fully comfortable and confident. It’s crucial that they never hesitate to ask questions or admit when something isn’t clear. When students feel safe and supported, genuine learning can take place. After that, I think it’s about helping them…

One of the most significant roles I believe a tutor can play for a student is to inspire a vision for a brighter future and a better life. A tutor serves as a guiding light, helping students navigate not only academic challenges but also shaping their path forward in life, extending beyond the boundaries of subject-specific problems. For me,…

Inside Cannon HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 Rebecca focused on applications of derivatives in calculus and worked through long division of polynomials; she also reviewed exam questions related to these topics.

Year 10 sessions with Lincoln involved factorising quadratic expressions using HCF and the difference of squares, along with practice solving simultaneous equations from word problems.

Meanwhile, Year 7 Josh practised constructing frequency distribution tables for data sets and represented information visually using histograms and polygons.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Maths Methods student recently transitioned from General Maths and struggled to recall key rules for critical paths and exact form answers, as noted: "remembering the equation for critical paths." This meant extra time spent hunting through notes during problem-solving, rather than building fluency.

In Year 10, another student hesitated to attempt long division of polynomials independently—when faced with similar questions in revision, she waited for guidance instead of practicing on her own.

For a Year 7 class assignment, difficulty converting units was linked to skipping written steps; "she tried to do it all in her head," which led to confusion mid-question.

Recent Achievements

One Cannon Hill tutor noticed Rebecca, a Year 11 student, has started to openly ask for clarification on difficult classwork—something she was hesitant to do before—which is helping her tackle complex trigonometry problems more independently.

Dyllan, in Year 10, recently managed to solve polynomial long division questions with only minimal prompting after initially needing step-by-step guidance; he even began checking his own answers by expanding brackets.

Meanwhile, Kate (Year 7) completed an online formative quiz and scored 21 out of 21 after working through each question's reasoning together, finishing the session feeling accomplished and ready for her upcoming exam.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carina Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Oliver Plunkett School.
